Jim Carrey plays two characters in the movie, and to make that work, they needed multiple stand-ins to play the characters as well, so Jim would have someone to interact with. This was especially important because he had to be in makeup for three hours for each character and couldn’t portray both characters on the same day.
“In a behind-the-scenes video for the digital release of Sonic the Hedgehog 3, actor James Marsden revealed there were six or seven stand-ins for Ivo and Gerald Robotnik who looked just like Jim Carrey.”
