[Dreamcast-XBox] relation? I don't get it
« on: September 10, 2021, 08:49:46 pm »

So there are some who regard the XBox as a sort of spin-off/successor to the Dreamcast. So... why is that?
To me, the XBox has two things in common with the Dreamcast.
  • The operating system of the Dreamcast is a customized Windows CE which means Microsoft had a hand in the development of the Sega Dreamcast.
  • Sega would often give planet codenames to the consoles they developed. These codenames usually after planets in the solar system. While not all the planets were used for all of Sega's consoles (Dreamcast' codename was "Katana"), there are some astronomers who believe their could be planets beyond Neptune, one of these hypothized planets being called "Planet X".
OK so XBox development codename was "DirectX Box" given DirectX was used as a basis API throughout the first few consoles. Just think the "Planet X" one is a coincidence and a stretch. But still why do some think XBox is what we would of had if the Dreamcast continued or something?

I think one of the reasons is because many of SEGA franchises sequel was exclusively released there for some time.

Shenmue 2
JSRF
Shenmue 2
Panzer Dragoon Orta
World Series Baseball
Crazy Taxi 3: High Roller
Sega GT 2002
The House of the Dead III
ToeJam & Earl III: Mission to Earth

I guess so. I just want to know if there is any more of a connection to that or if it's purely just because of what you said. Like, XBox nothing to do with Sega so kind of a big leap to say it's the successor to the Dreamcast.
