Games will never look as good as pre-rendered graphics. But it's getting close..

Some days ago I found this site that made custom filters for PC games so that they'd look more life-like. Amazing results.

Wait a minuite, Wait a MINUITE, WAIT A MINUITE!

Sonic 4 can not be compared to this, cause it is like comparing Tim Burton's joker to Christopher Nolan's Joker, both directors potrayed the same character in a different light.

First of all this Video is based on Sonic 3 and the Knuckles expansion pack where as Sonic 4, is only Sonic 4 in name it is actually more closer to a sequel of the orignal Sonic or Sonic 2 in the asthetic sense.

Sonic 3 was all about realism, it had evolved out of the checkered textures of Green Hill Zone and Emerald Hill Zone to realistic looking lavish naturesque terrain and that is why it is looking so excellent.

Sonic 4 is all about the return of the checkered backgrounds, if you want a Sonic game to look like this, expect it from Colors or Unleashed 2 not Sonic 4.

That is all I have to say, I am not saying the video isn't jaw dropping I am say the art direction in both games is very different and Sonic 4 is 2DHD (right?).

All about different design choices really.

This is completely possible on HD consoles, and even still as a budget release. Bionic Commando ReArmed (which came out in 2007 I think) did it pretty damn good, and that was seen as a 'low interest' series.

Looks great! Though the colors are a bit muted for my tastes.

This is exactly what the later half of Mushroom Hill Zone looks like.

That does not make any sense. It is portrayed differently, but you are still allowed to compare them as it is supposed to be the same character.

I do not agree.

The later releases set to have a more realistic approach sure, but basically everything you saw in Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and Sonic & Knuckles could not be possible in real life, not to mention a lot of those patterns still remain, like in Mushroom Hill Zone! I realize it is a videogame at the end of the day, but that does not mean there is no way possible to ever reach any kind of realism.

@Uranis

The game was a bit more colorful in the original though. All the colors look a bit dark and gritty in this fangame, which is also my only gripe together with the model.

I also wet myself when I saw this video at sonicretro. Man.. how I wish sega would take an example of that video.

I agree that the fan animation is completely possible on HD consoles, however I don't think it's possible as a downloadable game. As a 20th anniversary disc based game however...

I meant muted in that that this:

seems washed out compared to this:

Could have been something in the transition to youtube or maybe his output settings were off, seems a bit foggy, thats all. Just a small animation criticism.  :afroman:

That's just a consequence of the bloom. Take that out and bump the contrast and the color become vibrant. But then you'd lose the glossy effects and increase the sharpness which might make it look considerably inferior imo.

I wouldn't mind a remake like this though.

I think people meant how well the old school physics were captured in this video. Even if it's an animation, that's not an easy feat. We all know where Sonic 4 is heading in this department... I guess this clip took people by surprise.

I think the old school physics were not transitioned to 3D so much as the visuals were probably copied frame by frame via a gameplay video of the original stage.

This.

If they were to make a freaking physics engine they might as well make the whole game.

SonicWorld Engine exists for that reason. Of course Sonic fangames always get started but never get finished.

It looks good, except that Sonic is too slow. He needs to be faster.

Oh yeah, I see what you mean now on the colors. Probably is just the bloom though.

I agree that the fan animation is completely possible on HD consoles, however I don't think it's possible as a downloadable game.

Check out Shadow Complex and Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light, both of these games have slightly better graphics than launch titles on both HD consoles, and I am sure SEGA could do better still.

Yeah, everything looks spot on, so I cannot imagine it being done from memory... Even someone like me who has played those games thousands of hours could not do that probably.

Why are the fans so awkwardly good at this stuff?
