I think Street Fighter IV is more important and a better game overall than Sonic Adventure 2.

Having said that, I think that even Street Fighter IV getting GOTD is strange.

GOTD is really hard to decide, either in a poll or a personal decision. When you consider that "decade" spans everything from the Dreamcast through to today, you've got a hell of a lot of decisions. Then you've got dozens of genres, so again you have a lot of choices. So my point is, "game of the decade" is impossible to figure out.

*cough*Shenmue 2*cough*

Note i qualified it with 'I think'  :P

But yeah it does come down to opinion. As for 'more important', Street Fighter IV had a much larger impact on gaming than Sonic Adv 2 did. For good or bad it really did give a kick-start to the fighting scene again and bring it back to the masses. Sure it was still doing well before, but SFIV really kicked it into another gear.

In the end though I agree with Barry, ten years is a long, long time for any medium, especially video games. There have been so many important releases that are so different to eachother it's really almost impossible to pick one game that can be declared the best.

Oh wait, Shenmue II... disregard my last paragraph.

There was still a fighting game scene that remanined after all these years (well, at least till SFIII).
It's crazy. Since Capcom dropped SF for a time and SNK was just coming out with subpar rehashes and BS, people were still having tournaments with SFIIT and KoF '98 and pretty much anything that still had cabs avaiable coast to coast. I was amazed.
Personally, I'd say Arc Systems Works (and to an extent doujin fighters like Fate/Stay and Melty Blood) keep the people at bay for fighters and gaining momentum till Capcom said "oh, hey, let's check back with that fighting franchise that used to really popular over a decade ago!". Then we got that Chun-Li movie - just like old times!

Only time will decide on these things. I wish there was a legit history book about games.

I know dude, I just found interesting why SF4 would be more important lol

I think I have to disagree though. SF4 is a great great fighting game, but I think the genre was far from dead.
Still, besides being one of the best games on the DC/GC SA2 isn't 'important' at all per say..

Pleast note, I never stated the genre was 'Dead'. I know the genre was still alive and well so all I said was it gave it a big shot in the arm, which is hard to deny.

Some/most of the fighting games that have come out/coming out since may have still been around if it weren't for SFIV, but I do honestly believe that it helped the popularity of the genre by having SFIV be such a major release. Hell, I know it got me back into fighting games after not really taking them seriously for a long time.

Shmups are seeing a bit of a revival these days, too. Now that was a genre that you could barely feel it had a pulse since... what, mid 90s?

Well, yeah I can agree on that Made..

I still think that either of them really belong on this poll, even with SA2 being my favorite game.

There were great shmups on the Dreamcast, so I'd say they faded out in the early 00's. I think PSN and XBLA made them come back a bit, but it's still very fresh. We need more Thunder Force, Mars Matrix and GigaWing.

Most shumps now are dualstick shooters. They are like half of the games on the XBLA even. Kind of tiring.

On the topic of Sonic Adventure 2 and Street Fighter IV. I prefer Sonic Adventure 2 greatly, but do have to agree with MadeMang that SFIV really did help the genre out a lot.

That said, I do not really feel either should be considered for being the best game of the decade. I mean, they are not even Halo Reach.

I really don't think I could pick a single game of the decade. There've been so many amazing titles released.
I'd probably put Resident Evil 4, Rez, MGS3: Subsistence, and Elite Beat Agents on my short list.
