Nah you didn't offend me. I think I played most of the games you listed, baldurs gate is not 3d, it's made of sprites but ff7 being 3d isn't even the main thing of why I think it's such a good game.
First of all is the world itself. It's really unique and while there had been 6 installments before. Final fantasy 7 took things to a whole new level that even sequals haven't achieved to do yet. Final fantasy 8 was boring and it's fighting system was stupid(now that game is overated). Final fantasy 9 was good too but nowhere near 7. Everything after was just same ol square enix garbage. Funny however is that Crisis core on the PSP(ff7 spin off) is actually really good.
The story is really interesting but it only gets more interesting as you progress. The story is one of the highpoints overall. It is an excellent story. The thing however is that it's not just a good story. It's a lot more than that like you just said it being awesome. The story seems to have been made by those old school manga movie makers. I mean who doesn't love AKIRA? It gave off that vibe. The scene where Cloud tells the story of his past comes into my mind. Stuff like that just give me goosebumps when I think about them becuase it's really well done. Beside the good story, there was a humor in the game that was sorta japanese. But the good kind of japanese humor where it wasn't exegurating. I don't know if you ever did it but there's a city where you can visit a HOTEL where you can pick a room. If you pick the wrong room (or for some the right lol) you end up going in bath with GAYmen. Yeah it was a room for gays. I loled because it looked so stupid but also the music playing in the scene just fitted so excellent.
The game has a sort of apeal to it that's hard to describe. I really can't point my finger on to why the game was so special for me on my first playthrough. The story defenity plays a big role, the music as well, the world. But there are a lot of other games as well that do all those things right. I think it's the way all those factors mashed up together in such an excellent way to why it was so good. The music suited so perfect with each and every mood and scene.
The gameplay was good too. It wasn't complicated. It was simple but yet executed well. The gameplay is the thing which is most important. There are a lot of turn based RPG's that become repetitive after a while because of the battle system being boring, or random battles taking too long. Here it wasn't a problem at all. I recently opened a thread where I complimented Golden sun's battle system because battles didn't occur constantly but also if they occured, they didn't take that long, except for bosses. The materia system was just one of those simple systems that just needed to be added to add some extra spice to it. Simple but yet still interesting. All the battle themes were epic as well, all of them.
It being overrated? I don't know. It would easily get into my top 10.. or even 5 of games i've played throughout my life. Even now if I go ahead and start a new save file and replay it again, I know i'll finish it again with a lot of joy, for maybe the 5th time.
Lol, while your reading this you may notice that i'm one of them guys that might be overrating it too much
.
Though i'd like to point out that Skies of Arcadia, another dear game to me, defenitly surpasses ff7 in every way for me.
I'd like to know, did you finish ff7? Or please tell me your own experiences with the game.
PS: I agree with the MTV part
