Wii game reccomendations
« on: January 19, 2011, 06:16:03 pm »
Hey kids! So I think I'll be getting a Wii in the early part of this year. Maybe in March or April. My question is, as a SEGA fan and fan of crazyass games, what should I get?

I'm not too into Nintendo stuff (Zelda, Metroid, etc.) however I am a fan of platformers both 2D and 3D. That's the main reason I want the console, to play Sonic Colors, the new Kirby and give Super Mario Galaxy a go. Also, in the off chance that there is a 20th anniversary exclusive, I want to be able to play it. I'm also a fan of lightgun games, and haven't played one since the Dreamcast. That makes me a sad panda. I am not interested in any of the motion control party games, as the Kinect has filled that role well for me.

Basically I want games that can be played sitting down and can be played with the Wii Classic Controller or a Gamecube pad. Minimal motion controls and accessories is a plus.

Here's my list so far:
Sonic Colors
HOTD Overkill
HOTD 2&3 Return
Gunblade NY and L.A. Machineguns Arcade Hits Pack
*Ghost Squad
MadWorld
Let's Tap
Ivy the Kiwi
Wario Ware Smooth Moves
No More Heroes
No More Heroes 2
Super Mario Galaxy
Super Mario Galaxy 2

And as a Sonic Team nerd, I'll be getting these at some point. Don't care if they're shitty, just want to give them a try:
NiGHTS: Journey into Dreams
Sonic and the Secret Rings
Sonic and the Black Knight
Sonic Riders Zero Gravity

Sonic and the Black Knight is fun. I haven't gotten to play enough of the Secret Rings, but from what I played of it I  really enjoyed it.

I really enjoyed NiGHTS: Journey of Dreams.

For other light-gun games, there's always Ghost Squad. The Resident Evil light-gun games are pretty solid too.

Sin & Punishment 2, Donkey Kong Country Returns, and the remake of Klonoa are all safe bets.

On the more RPG side of things there's Muramasa and Little King's Story.

I think with Ghost Squad on there you've got it covered.

Cool, I'll add it. Forgot about that one.

For NiGHTS: JoD, are you able to play the game without playing the non-NiGHTS segments? Or are they obtrusive to the gameplay?

Also, it's nuts how Nintendo games never drop in price while the third party stuff is dirt cheap! The first Mario Galaxy is still $40! Meanwhile MadWorld is like $7 and nearly all the old SEGA titles are under $20 each.

Zack and Wiki is one of the best games on the Wii. It does involve pointing at the screen and shaking the Wiimote, but it's very natural and appropriate.

Madworld can tire you out though. I only played the first level and it was too exhausting to make me want to pick it up again. It made me feel like I was playing Wii Boxing with weighted gloves. The announcers were damn funny though.

I really enjoyed NiGHTS: Journey of Dreams.

This!!! The in-game cinemas will test your gag reflex, but the gameplay is solid. It's also pretty and the soundtrack is beyond awesome.

I wouldn't recommend one unless you get a used one for 100 bucks at Gamestop.

The non-NiGHTS segments aren't skippable, but they're really not that bad. It was the first NiGHTS game I ever played, and they didn't bother me at all. It's dirt cheap now too.

Pretty much every release from SEGA, Capcom, Namco, and Ubisoft go down to the $20 or less mark at some point. Especially on the Wii. Nintendo gets away with not dropping the prices, because the games are good, and people keep buying them. Mario Kart DS came out a long time ago, but it's still consistently in the list of top selling DS games on a monthly basis.

The motion control stuff in Zack and Wiki is pretty interesting. It sounds like for the most part, you want to avoid senseless waggle, and that's not what this one's about.

The new Punch-Out is pretty great, if you don't tough games. It's also not built around motion control.

Make sure you get Zack & Wiki. It's one of the best puzzle games I've played in a long time. And it's filled with that wonderful thing that most games these days totally omit - charm!

I'd recommend skipping NiGHTS though. If you're a fan of the original, it's only going to break your heart. It was clearly released in a totally unfinished state.

Thanks! When I get around to getting the console, I'll give Zack and Wikipedia a try :)

Took a look at Gamestop's used price for the Wii, $130 with tax and no game included. :P Good think I have a few used stores near me. I'm certain they'll beat the Gamestop price and probably will add in a game (one that is NOT Wii Sports).

It's no more unfinished than Sonic Adventure, and that game's still pretty fun.

It's not perfect, but it's still really enjoyable in spite of any flaws. I'd say check it out and decide for yourself.

See if you can find any of those Red Wii consoles that were around for the 25th Anniversary. They had the console, Wii motion Plus, Nunchuck, Wii Sports, New Super Mario Bros and Super Mario Bros pre-installed.

If it's anything like Australia the places like Wal-Mart will be selling them for a song as well.

As for games, looks like most people have the best ones covered. Don't listen to the haters, theres some great games on the system.

Sonic Team made lots of crap games before, but NiGHTS: Journey of Dreams made it so that I can never love a new game by them ever again. I consider it one of the worst sequels I have ever played, but the music is great! lololol

Anyways, Sonic and the Secret Rings has a billion problems but once you get into it, the game is really not that bad at all.

I really, really, really want to get rid of these two games though and would like to trade or sell them to you if possible. I am not willing to try and find a way to sell them any other way and they are only worth chump change nowadays so I never tried hard enough for it to matter. Both are in excellent condition.

Also am willing to put Samba de Amigo in that if you would like and make a good enough offer.

And I would recommend you pick up Wario Land: Shake It, nowhere near as good as the last few Wario Land games, but it is one of the better platformers on Wii, and I think you will love the humor. The Harvest Moon games might be a good buy, as well as something like Animal Crossing if you never played the previous releases. Something like Rune Factory plays a good bit like Phantasy Star Online also.

Curse you for not having Epic Mickey on your list, one of the only great games on Wii. [spoiler:1arjzch5]And Data East Collection.[/spoiler:1arjzch5]
