What Game was so exciting you bought a console?
« on: February 01, 2011, 11:43:12 am »
I don't usually start a topic, but I thought of this in the PSP2 discussion.

I don't buy a console until some game comes out that I must have.  Who else does this?  Has anyone done this as recklessly as me?

Saturn = Panzer Dragoon 1 and 2 (then Saga)
Dreamcast = New Panzer Dragoon (I bet on the wrong horse)
XBOX = Panzer Dragoon Orta
Game Cube = Godzilla Destroy All Monsters Melee (later there was an xbox version)
XBOX 360 = Clive Barker's Demonik (Never happened)
PS3 = Valkyria Chronicles
Wii = Godzilla Unleashed (ended up being terrible)

I guess I am a little impulsive.  I bought 2 consoles for games that never happened, one for a game that ended up being multi-platform, and one for a game I ended up selling.

Edit:  Atari 2600, NES and SMS my parents bought for us, so I don't count those.  I bought a Super Famicom due to pier pressure when I lived in Japan (I wanted a Saturn, but it was brand new and way too expensive).  I also bought a N64, maybe for Killer INstinct or Mario Kart?  I can't remember, and I don't have it anymore.  PS1 Maybe for FF7.

Hmmm, generally I used to just buy the next Sega console, because i knew it would have more of the games I loved. Since Dreamcast things had changed a bit, but I can't think of any one game that drove me to get something.

For Mega Drive, my dad bought one for me. Saturn and Dreamcast were defaults since they were the next Sega console (although Sonic Adventure and VF3 were the big Dreamcast draws. VF2 for saturn).

Xbox - I was on the fence until I saw the 'Super Entertainment Deal' or whatever. Basically an Xbox, DVD Remote, Halo, Jet Set Radio Future and Sega GT 2002. Awesome, awesome bundle.

PS2 - Bought one last year for a number of games, the $79 price tag won me over.

Xbox 360 - The successor to Xbox, which I grew to love. At launch I can't think what really drove me, it certainly wasn't Perfect Dark Zero...

Wii - My sister wanted one, and I wanted to check out Twilight Princess, which ended up being pretty awesome. First Zelda game I ever played too.

PS3 - Again, got it for a good price from a friend more than any one game, but Yakuza series and Valk were the big drivers.

I bought nearly every SEGA console simply because it was a SEGA console (though I did not get the 32X or SEGA CD on release, due to being a poor little boy). Saturn I picked up in 1997 for NiGHTS, though over time I got into the AM2 fighters and the Sonic Team titles for the system.

XBOX - Bought it ONLY to play JSRF. Later I got most of the other SEGA titles as well as Halo and Blinx. When JSRF released, I rented an XBOX from the local video store and played JSRF for four straight days. 9 months later I bought the JSRF/SEGA GT bundle that had the revised controller included for my birthday. I had already played Shenmue II on the Dreamcast, however I did buy the XBOX version to support a potential sequel (damn!).

PS2 - Bought it December 2001 when the Dreamcast was on the way out. I think Rez was the one game I bought the system for, however since I was a savvy importer so I swear I knew I could import it. I think the promise of AM2 and UGA games also caused me to buy the console. After buying it, I got into Kingdom Hearts 1.

360 - Bought it in 2009 with cruise ship casino winnings. Wanted to play a lot of titles, however Sonic Unleashed was the first game I picked up in a buy 2 get 1 free deal. Also got Superstars Tennis and Sonic '06 for free (lol).

Bought an Xbox for JSRF, DOA3 and the eventual release of Ninja Gaiden.

Xbox - Bought it for the sake of the English version of Shenmue 2, since I refused to play it without the charming English dubs.

If a console is not listed that I own or used to own, it is because I got it as a gift or cannot remember entirely why I got it at first.

Saturn - Got it years after mainly for Virtua Fighter games, Sonic games and NiGHTS.

Dreamcast - Sonic Adventure. Launch.

Neo Geo Pocket Color - Sonic Pocket Adventure

Nintendo 64 - Conker's Bad Fur Day, I think

Game Boy Advance - Sonic Advance, probably some other stuff too

GameCube - The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker, Super Smash Brothers Melee, Sonic Adventure games again

Wii - The Legend of Zelda series, original Sonic games and Nintendo EAD games.

Xbox - Shenmue II and Dead or Alive 3, Jet Set Radio Future also looked cool to me. Probably a lot of other stuff, I used to blindly hate the platform.

Xbox 360 - Sonic 06 (Yep.), Dead or Alive 4 (which ended up disappointing me a lot) and Ninja Gaiden II even though it was not announced at the time. I assumed this would be the next console I would be completely content with for 5 or so years, and I was right, but the first year was pretty bad.

PlayStation - Spyro the Dragon, Crash Bandicoot games

PlayStation 2 - Jak and Daxter, Shinobi, Final Fantasy X (LOL) and the first Crash Bandicoot game not by Naughty Dog, it was the last in the series I ever bought.

PlayStation 3 - Yakuza series, Naughty Dog games and miscellaneous games.

NES: Super Mario Bros. - The ability to find hidden bricks that would spit out coins kind of blew my mind back then.  The kind of secrets that were passed down through the playground.

SEGA Genesis: Sonic the Hedgehog 2 - The huge amount of speed you get on those loops in Chemical Plant Zone.

Gameboy: It was a gift, but Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Fall of the Foot Clan got a lot of playtime.

Nintendo 64: There was a kiosk in town that had demos of Waverace 64, Banjo-Kazooie, Mario Kart 64, and GoldenEye to test out. GoldenEye was the one that really sold me though.

Gamecube: The tech demo for the Zelda that never happened. That and Smash Bros. Melee.

Dreamcast: Shenmue - I was really interested in this one for a couple years before I got my Dreamcast.

Gameboy Advance: Metroid Fusion - I had this game for over 6 years before I finally played through it last year.

PSOne: Final Fantasy VII - I picked it up and played through it so that Advent Children would make sense. I'd been interested in the game since it came out though. I got a few gaming magazines and memorized all the character names, drew copies of the artwork, the whole deal.

Nintendo DS: Embarrassingly enough, I think it was Nintendogs. I picked up the Mario Kart bundle though.

Wii: The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess - It was the Zelda game I'd been waiting for since the Gamecube tech demo.

PS2: Guitar Hero II/MGS2/Yakuza - Another system I bought pretty late in the grand scheme of things.  Yakuza reminded me of Shenmue, I couldn't stop playing Guitar Hero at my friend's place, and I needed to know what happened next once I beat Twin Snakes on the Gamecube.

PS3: Metal Gear Solid 4, and Valkyria Chronicles - I picked up the MGS4 bundle so it would come with the Dual Shock 3 instead of the sixaxis.

PSPGo: Valkyria Chronicles 2, and MGS: Portable Ops - There wasn't a chance in hell that I was going to miss the next Valkyria Chronicles game.

XBOX was basically a Smilebit machine for me. Forgot to add GunValkyrie and Otogi 1&2 (not Smilebit). Those three are still only on the XBOX, really wish they had backward compatibility on the 360.

I got the SEGA games for Xbox, but never got around to getting an Xbox. Thankfully, my girlfriend has one though :).

Wish i had something unxpected to say, but jet set radio sold me both a dreamcast and an xbox 180. Metroid Prime 3 got me on board with the wii- the best first-person shooter control system i've ever seen.

The only game that has moved an entire console for me was Shenmue II on the Xbox.

I bought

Dreamcast for Resident Evil: Code Veronica 10 years later still totally worth it.

Gamecube for Resident Evil 4 (with 0 + 1 being bonuses it was mainly RE4) I miss the absence of scary dark scenes from previous games but as a whole 4 does more things right than it does wrong.

X360 for Resident Evil 5: Worst decision of my life, I bought the RE5 Edition 360 it doesn't come with the extras included in RE5 limited edition it is in hideous red, the extra charges for buying controllers and rechargable battery packs (which then die and i'm back to buying AA battries) have greatly disappointed further more the fucking machine doesn't even have wifi.

But those are all small complaints, I found RE4 to be rather inorganic it was an amazing game but it was to much of a side story and not a real Resident Evil game everything about it was so different. Resident Evil 5 on the other hand couldn't successfully move all the RE4 gameplay features into the sequel nor did it have a exciting b movie storyline like RE4, the storyline wasn't even thrilling and emotionally intense as 2 and Code Veronica.

It was quite a disappointment and a miserable way to end a phenomenal series.

Kamiya's best work for sure!

Truly heart wrenching. I love the part where he screams out her name and punches the ground.

RE5 was kinda a dissapointing end to the series, but Wesker was awesome throughout at least. Really cemented him as the 'Big Bad' of the series. My favourite is still Code Veronica though.
