I always wanted to experim, ent more with DE-9 controllers, see their limits and so on. They seem to be universal. Like the idea of putting a Mega Drive controller into a Master System.

Back then before USB port exist, most of peripherals and accesories weren't plug and play.
We have to install driver from diskette / CD attached with them.
Without the driver, those peripherals were useless.
I had this one printer that can't be used anymore, couldn't find the driver from internet, not even from the maker itself.

So you couldn't just plug in a Mega Drive controller into an Atari and expect it to work? Or vivce-versa with those joystick controllers? To think there was an era where all consoles had DE-9 ports.

Just because they share same ports don't mean they could work on other platform.
They need program to recognize them first.
On PC, it's called driver. On game console, usually they're converted or using an adapter.

Of course sometimes there are third parties controllers that could work for many platforms.
But the originals weren't built like that.
If you find originals that could work on another platform, probably it was already converted, example :

Oh. it would of been interesting to test various controllers on various consoles. Such as the XG-1 light gun on games for the Phaser.

Yeah, as long as it's not damaging the console / peripheral.

I don't see why it would, just be interesting to experiment. Such as say the Atari joystck controller on the Master System.

As mentioned before, it wouldn't work properly for different consoles without driver / converter.
So to make it worked properly without them, we need to modify some pins, sometimes solder bridge between pin also required.
That's where it's tricky.
