I think Infinite was content at being just a lacky while Dr. Starline hoped for both a mentorship program and some equal footing with Eggman.

Considering his background, yes, he could be fine with just that.
But with Infinite having God-like power, I'm sure Eggman's still wary of him and prepare a counter measure in case something's gone wrong between their relationship.
