There is a difference between "Wonderboy", "Boy Wonder", and "Wonder Boy".  ;)
Ones a video game hero, the other is sidekick to Batman.

Still like Batman, he's also a movie hero.
Yes, there was a Wonder Boy movie before....
(Based on Wonder Boy 3 though, not the first one)

Wonder Boy (2010)

Quote
Wonder Boy (2010) is CGI animation movie adaptation of the Wonder Boy video game series (namely, "Wonder Boy 3: The Dragon's Trap", "Wonder Boy In Monster World" and comic series called "Wonder Boy In Demon World").
Movie was originally slated to be a live-action movie by Uwe Boll and was the main news story in Retro Gamer Magazine issue 51.
After a long drawn out fight with SEGA refusing to ressurrect the character (even though SEGA only owns the trademark, not the copyright), Uwe Boll walked away.
So the project became an unauthorised CGI project led by its screenwriter Robin Morningstar.

Movie was considered as lost media but in 2017, it was mysteriously found as unlisted YouTube video from description of the movie review video.
Film became lost media again when in 2021, Google privatised all the unlisted YouTube videos uploaded before 2017 unless you opt-out.[9]
There has been a DVD at some point in 2011, but it's no longer available to purchase.

Even I doubt it when i first found it, lol.
Should've put it in SEGA related Anime/Cartoon list,
but the movie's an unauthorised one so I still kinda hesitate.
Still it's an interesting piece of history.

I tried watching it, only got through 15 minutes or it or so.
This animated movie came out the same year as Tangled, Despicable Me, Toy Story 3 and HTTYD came out.
I can't even say "This looks like it was made in the 80s or 90s" because Pizar was still well ahead in quality 3D animation during that time.
PlayStation 1 CGI looks better than this.

Why is it so shit?

Because the maker (the scriptwriter) had a little or almost no funding to make the movie.
SEGA has already rejected it, Uwe Boll had left, and all down to the scriptwriter who loves Wonder Boy and doesn't want his script went to waste.
Without funding and SEGA's approval, this is basically like a fan movie.

Will admit, I liked the concept of the "Fountain of Youth" being something already well established and known of in the beginning instead of the end goal. Even going as far as serving as a mixed blessing for Shion. Though why would the bad guy try to drown him in the pool of life I do not know.

That's the most I could figure out from watching a quarter of the film.

The Revival of Wonder Boy / Monster World series!

Quote
Since its revival in 2016, we only missed one year of another entry!
The Wonder Boy series is back and has found a modern audience.
There is nothing anyone can say nor do to convince me otherwise!
What an incredible renaissance!

Don't worry. I think the only way I can recommend it to him is with Twatter or by popular demand.
