What sort of SEGA collector are you?
« on: January 16, 2014, 08:03:55 am »
Even if you don't proclaim to be a SEGA collector, everybody here on the forums must have some sort of shelf or box or corner dedicated to storing and displaying your old SEGA games. I was curious what sort of things everybody collects? Is there any specific areas you focus on, like specific genres or consoles? Do you collect stuff outside of games and consoles, like books, soundtracks, figures, or statues?

---

From '91 to '09 I was pretty casual in my collecting. Not to say I didn't have a decent library of games, but I was mainly buying stuff I wanted to play, and typically didn't spend much on games. Around 2009, when the Dreamcast turned 10 years old, I really started to get into Dreamcast collecting and it has since been my console of focus with my total game count hitting 160 this past weekend. Now, however, my "want list" (a real thing I carry in my wallet) has shrunk to a handful of affordable but forgettable titles, and a few rarities.

I have a decent amount of Genesis games, around 40, however a bulk are ones I purchased new in the early 90's. I guess given how easy it is to emulate Genesis games, and the cases take up more space than CD cases, I'm not all that active in Genesis collecting despite having played a lot of the library through emulation (I know, it's not the same thing).

SEGA CD is a system I really want to focus more on in the future, though the quality titles are generally quite expensive. Still, I'm happy with the 20 or so games I do have. The Saturn is also a console I'd like to own more games for, but like the SEGA CD, I feel that outside of the super rare titles I have all the games I really want for the system. Those long boxes are so big that a few shitty titles really take up space on the shelf.

32X is a console I would love to expand my collection of, and given how small the library is it's likely by the end of the year I'll have all the games I really want for the add-on. At the moment I'm keeping my eyes peeled for: Tempo, Zaxxon's Motherbase 2000, After Burner, Space Harrier, Darxide, and the SEGA CD 32X titles (aside from Corpse Killer, which I already own).

I want to get my hands on a Master System or a Power Base Converter, or one of these: http://www.stoneagegamer.com/powerbase-mini.html

Outside of games, I really like books on SEGA games and consoles. I think I have all the well known ones, but a few more art books from select franchises would be nice. I like picking up classic Sonic stuff, which if you ask my wife I have too much of. I also like affordable curiosities and little figures, like the SEGA Gals gashapon set.

As much as I love the First 4 Figures statues, they're way too expensive for me. I'd rather spend that money on a new console or a rare game. I figure if you're into video games, why spend a bulk of your fun money on stuff you can't play?

My collection is pretty small by most collectors' standards, but I have some pretty interesting items. I collect for all four of the primary consoles, but not for the Game Gear or Gen/MD add-ons. There are a few 32X games that I'd like, but since the set-up is a hassle I might not venture in that direction. I do like to have the boxes and manuals and just read through them and check out the artwork occasionally.

The largest part of my collection is the Master System. So far I've got just over 50 games, mostly U.S. releases but I've just recently got my first European releases. The European library is roughly twice as big as the U.S. library, and much better supported by third party developers, so eventually I'm looking forward to collecting quite a few of those titles. My approach to collecting the games is to get my favorites, and get ones that I've always been interested in but wasn't able to get back when I was a kid. I've got a couple of the rarer titles that are a bit pricy, like Power Strike and Golden Axe Warrior, but that's because they're excellent games that really show what the SMS is capable of, not because I covet rarity itself. The SMS library is organized in really cool ways that appeal to collecting -- there are several card titles, and several 3D titles, as well as box design variations through the years. I think the system was designed from the outset with longevity and collecting in mind... thank you to whoever convinced the money men to sign off on the nice plastic cases. Hardware-wise, I've got most of the peripherals boxed and in really nice condition. I don't specifically seek out mint condition stuff but I've lucked out in a lot of instances. The last of the hardware I want to get is the Japanese Master System, which has an incredible FM synthesis chip (certain games have an enhanced soundtrack) and has a paddle controller for a few games.

The next largest section of my collection is the Sega Saturn. This is the only Sega console I never had when it was being made, so it's a lot of fun getting caught up on its amazing library. I'm especially interested in the Japanese releases and have been going for the arcade-perfect ports of Sega's superscaler classics -- so far I've got Out Run, Space Harrier, and Power Drift. I've got some other great games, both U.S. and Japanese releases, like VF2, Daytona USA, Fighters Megamix, In the Hunt, Darius Gaiden, and the Panzer Dragoon series. I've also got most of the first party peripherals boxed. (The reason I like boxed peripherals, aside from looking cool, is that they can be more organized than a chaotic drawer of controllers and cords.). But, since the Saturn library, especially the coveted shmups, are getting insanely expensive, I opted for a modded Saturn for getting some games in the future. Otherwise I'd never be able to afford a lot of those games.

With the Genesis, I'm mostly interested in the early U.S. releases with the original black box design. But there are so many excellent games from its lifespan I'm sure I'll eventually have a pretty even distribution of titles through the years. I was happy to get Forgotten Worlds recently. And this time last year I beat Revenge of Shinobi for the first time (always got close as a kid). I was able to get the first edition console boxed (with the Altered Beast screenshot). And one interesting peripheral I have is the Japanese-only release XE-1 ST2 joystick, a really cool and fairly small arcade stick. My brother also recently got me one of the new AtGames mini-consoles with built-in games and a cartridge port, so that's pretty cool too.

My Dreamcast collection is the smallest right now, but with some gems. I opted for a black Sega Sports version to have all my Sega consoles matching. And I've got the official boxed Samba De Amigo maracas. (I actually scored two boxed sets of maracas for an incredible price and gave one to a friend to get him back into the Dreamcast.)

Then, of course, I've got a bunch of post-console era releases. The Yakuza games and JSRF are my favorites, but there are a bunch of classics.

Other unique items... I modified a non-working SMS into a display case for my set of gashapon Sega History consoles.  :P I got an awesome Dreamcast vinyl record that I won through Barry's site! And my mom gave me the Sega Consumer History book for xmas. Whatta mom! Actually, aside from that book being rather pricy ($60), I think collecting old cartridges has made xmas shopping a lot cheaper for my family, now that they know I'll be thrilled to get three or four $5 games. And I've got a cool Yakuza Dead Souls package that George is holding onto for me right now.

I've got about half of this stuff on display on some nice shelves, and the other half occupies a closet with my Trinitron set-up. I found a great 27" Trinitron for $10, and I can have four or five consoles hooked up to it at once. Then when I'm done playing, I can close the door and don't have to see a gigantic tube TV hanging around. When we buy our own house, I'm going to build a nice wooden cabinet and/or shelves for everything and hopefully have a more comfortable area for gaming. My long-term approach to collecting is just to take it slow (I never intend to "complete" the collection), get fun games that I'll actually play, and only go for really good deals.

Mine is shown in the Gaming Collection thread but...

I have better images of those figurines!  ;D

I am buying more SEGA merc but it's mainly about the games really.

I consider myself a collector that buys games that I want to keep that are high quality, so most Sonic games are usually sold once I beat them....*sigh*, I just wish the newer games had more replay-value than it does now.

**May have to upload more soon, since ImageShack is being a bitch.

Let me preface this by saying that while I do consider myself a Sega collector, I've been humbled by the "Share your Collections thread". Amazing stuff.

That being said, I never really took off on collecting until I started part-time at EB 2 years ago. Since then, simple rules. Anything Sega traded in, I buy so long as:

- I don't already own 2 copies (one sealed and one for playing)
- No Movie Licensed or Sports titles (e.g AVP)
- Any game or peripheral for one of the original Sega consoles I buy, regardless of the two rules above.

Over just two years from trade-ins, I've gotten almost every post DC Sega game (excluding handheld titles), including JP exclusives like Virtual On Force and Initial D.

For original Sega Consoles, I have a ton of DC and Saturn games as well as every Sega console except the ones that came out before Genesis.

I can't get into the Toy Collection part of collecting cus that would simply bankrupt me. Way too many toys continually being made and these days they all look good. Luckily, I rarely see them in the wild anyways.

Sadly, ALL of my gaming related stuff is boxed except for the Wii U. I just don't have the space to setup the dream shrine and show it all off like I'd like to. Even though everything I buy goes straight to storage, I don't see myself stopping anytime soon and I'll probably have to be buried with all of it if my future children don't appreciate Sega the way that I do.

I'm a reasonably serious collector. As of now, this is my collection....

Sega Master System (M1), 2 controllers, 1 arcade stick, 1 Light Phaser. Roughly 15-20 titles. Most of 'em boxed with instructions. I play Double Dragon and R-Type the most, followed by Out Run and Shinobi.

The Genesis collection is ridiculous. 60 games; more than half of which are complete. I have a Sega Genesis (M1), Sega CDX, several controllers (first and third party), a Menacer (broken), six-button arcade stick, cord extensions, etc. Some of my favorite pieces are the Sonic trilogy (CIB), along with Sonic & Knuckles (CIB). Not many rare games. Time Killers is a tough find these days.

Decent library of Sega CD games. No more than 25 right now. Again, most of 'em are complete. I only have the CDX at this point, though I hope to find an original M1. Games I play the most are Soul Star, The Terminator and Sol-Feace. Sonic CD may very well be my favorite Sonic title. I also have the original version of Night Trap before is was re-released and censored.

32X is a real joy. It's complete with box and instructions. Many games are complete. Have 16 cartridges. 9 are complete. 2 Sega CD 32X games (Night Trap and Corpse Killer).

The Saturn is a tad ridiculous. Lots of American and Japanese titles. All but four of them are complete. 2 North American units (M1 and M2), 1 Japanese unit (M2, with a VCD card installed), several controllers (first and third party), 1 flight stick, 1 Stunner, 1 3D Analogue Controller, 3 4MB Expansion carts and 1 4-in-1 Action Replay Plus cart. A few rarities, including the Panzer Dragoon trilogy (CIB) and my Dracula X: Nocturne in the Moonlight (CIB). Love those ones. X-Men vs. Street Fighter and Marvel Super Heroes vs. Street Fighter are a couple import favorites I play a lot. Deep Fear is one of my first imports that survived the fire.

Not much for Game Gear right now. 2 Game Gear consoles. My blue model's in fantastic shape. The black one is totally bust. Needs the capicitors replaced. Roughly 20 or games. Multiple copies of Sonic 2, though one is complete. 1 carrying case, 1 AC adapter, 1 Super Wide Gear, and that's all she wrote.

In addition to all these units, I also have an NES, SNES (plays Super Famicom titles in addition to North American releases), Nintendo DS, Atari 2600, PS2 (North American and Japanese), PS3, PSP and Xbox (original). Lots of games spread across the board. SEGA consoles and games obviously get the most attention.

I've never really considered myself a "collector", more just a practical gamer and an amateur writer looking for material. Everything and anything I buy, I buy with the intent to play, which is why I'll often buy games that are incomplete (since their often a lot cheaper) and refuse to buy anything sealed.

I do have a lot display pieces though. A lot of them are games i just bought that incidentally happened to be in great condition, but most of the rarer games I bought CIB mostly because they are expensive no matter WHAT condition you get them in, so why not just get the complete game?

I'll name my highlights for now:

Shenmue 2 (DC Import)

L.O.L.

Elan Doree

Silhouette Mirage

Panzer Dragoon Trilogy

Burning Rangers

Sonic Jam

Fighters Megamix

Astal

Shining Force 3

Lunar Silver Star

Snatcher

Snatcher is easily the most expensive thing I own, and it's a thing of beauty. I've barely played it mostly because I don't like messing with the disc, and I keep the game separate from the case because those SEGA CD jewel cases will shatter if you look at them funny.

O also have a Ryo Hazuke statue and some SEGA artwork I've bought from Archie Comics and SoA, including the orginal version of the Panzer Dragoon Orta magazine ad and the original linework for one of my favorite Sonic comic covers, Knuckles Chaotix.

Hm..  Well, I just posted most of my collection in the Collection threat..  I consider myself a borderline casual/serious collector.  There are certain things I look for, and if I come across something rare, or a gem, I try and get it. I have the rare Sonic (the Fighters) Championship US release of the arcade and is the only arcade system I own currently.  I collect the First 4 Figures statues, but have been trying to get out of that as they're getting way too expensive...  I have a large Sonic the Hedgehog collection because that's what I collected when I was younger.

My largest collection by far is my Dreamcast collection, which is mostly what I try and focus on.  I have around 75 games.  I've even been getting some of the new unlicensed games as well, like Sturmwind.

The Saturn is my next system I collect for, coming in at 36 games with some imports, like Snatcher (even though I don't read a lick of Japanese...I just wanted to play the game for once!) and X-Men vs Street Fighter.  I don't have a copy of Dragoon Saga, but I have the other two.

Coming in 3rd is the Sega CD.  I managed to find a Sega CDX system a year ago and the guy threw in about 12 games with it, bringing my total to around 30 games.  I also have a M2 system and managed to find both the Pink Label and Blue Label variants of Sonic CD.  I'm still hunting for a copy of Snatcher and Popful Mail...  Those are the two games high on my want list at the moment that keep eluding me...

I have a 32X, complete with box and instructions, but only 7 games for it.  I don't have much luck finding 32X or Sega CD 32X games around this area, so they're really difficult for me to come by.

My Genesis only gets a little love and I only pick up games I really want to play on them.  Mostly ones I just remember playing as a kid back in the early 90's.  So the Sonic series, Streets of Rage, ToeJam and Earl Series and Golden Axe.  Though, my total games are around 40, because I keep finding them for extra cheap in these parts and people seem to want to just get rid of them left and right.  Most aren't of the greatest of games, but some decent Shmups.  No MUSHA though...

I have two Game Gears.  An original by Sega and a Majesco one.  I have a handful of sealed GameGear games I got in a lot while trying to get a copy of Sonic Spinball for it.  I only have 15 games for it, mostly all the Sonic games.

Well, I can now say that I am the proud owner of a SEGA Pico (okay, it's coming in the mail this week, but I already paid for it). I already had Sonic Gameworld, and now I have eight additional games including Ecco Jr. I hope to have a few more by the end of the month. :D

So I'll have 12 of the 20 games available for the system in the US. Might as well go for a full library at this point.

I'd say i'm a Sega Collector. I was born into gaming so my bro's were the ones that introduced me to Sega games. I started collecting Sega games and consoles at an early age, so far this is what i've got.

Sega Genesis Console - 40-50 games about 10 boxed. My gems on it are Phantasy Star II and III in boxes.
Sega Genesis Model 2

Sega Mega Drive Japanese Unit - I only have 1 Mega Drive Game

Sega 32x console - About 5 games, 3 of which are boxed. My rarity on this console is probably Kolibri.

Sega CD Model I - I've got about 11 Sega CD games, the 1 game i love and own in a case is Lunar Silver Star Story

2 Sega CDX Consoles

Sega Saturn - About 10 games.

Sega Game Gear - Got about 20 or so games, really liked Shinobi on this, it was awesome.

Sega Dreamcast - About 30 games or so, including imports. My favorite game was RE: Code Veronica although i think one of my rarities is Skies of Arcadia.

I think i'll always collect Sega games, maybe not action figures or toys though. I've always been interested in buying a Mark III or SG-1000, maybe someday.

Including JP exclusives like Virtual On Force.

To be honest, I regret not buying the twin sticks when I got mine, as I played twin sticks at an Expo last year and....wow....it really DOES improve the game as far as I'm concerned....not that I want to pay £300 for a controller (I had a rant somewhere else that I thought that Panzer Dragoon Saga was a little too much, even though I had a great deal), but damn....I really regret not getting the Twin Sticks for it. :(

Well, to sum up my story, I went through a whole bunch of transitions, and the fact many people are working on projects for all kinds of videogame systems including my own projects, makes my life a happier place. I think that is the upbeat way to look at things. You can see a trail of my transitions, all dated.

I'm interested in seeing a detailed and complete timeline of all your transitions. I would prefer this to be done in PowerPoint, accompanied with numerous graphs and charts of the bar and pie variety. Elaborate transition effects and MIDI renditions of your favorite TV/VG theme songs are optional but highly recommended.

You should try and snag that Japanese only Pokemon game that came out on the Pico (the only Pokemon game that apparently released on a SEGA console).

How do I know this? I read it online somewhere or possibly in a Magazine.

I mean...it's not "that" much of a coup, but it'd be interesting as to own something that is peculiar.
