So Duck Hunt is pretty much the signature game associated with the NES Zapper.
What game would you say best represents the Sega Light Phaser?

My guess it's "Marksman Shooting / Trap Shooting / Safari Hunt" but no one seems to bring it up as often as Duck Hunt.

Sadly yes, "Marksman Shooting / Trap Shooting / Safari Hunt" is the one I picked and I'd still say it isn't as iconic as the duck hunt dog alone.
The ducks might be forgetable, but that damn dog?
Who's always laughing when we missed the shot?
Nobody whoplayed the game could ever forget him, Ever!

Nintendo sure knows how to make iconic characters.

Pity closest Sega has to MS/TS/SH character is racist and outdated stereotypes.

If Safari Hunt was ever given a re-release, perhaps best to change the tribal men to a more fictional depiction of them.

Did you know in the book Charlie and the Chocolate Factory the oompa-loompas were originally depicted as tribal pygmies?

The movie change them to orange-skinned "little helpers" like being because even 1971 wasn't that racist!

In "fictionalizing" Oompa-Loompas more than they already were made them stand out more as well as less offensive in design.

So y'know, Sega could always do that for their characters that had not aged well.

That's new to me.
I thought oompa-loompas was some kind of dwarves.
But now it makes sense why they're depicted as short people.

Yeah, Sega could always do that but they won't do that.
They could also change or remove White Bufallo to make it less racism for fans' requested 30th anniversary Power Instinct game collection but they choose to avoid lawsuit by not touching the franchise at all.

They can just tan his skin more and make him Native American. From what I understood parents would name their newborns after the first thing they see outside the tent, an albino buffalo may had been passing by at the time.

Oh, I see.. I thought the animal name was supposed to be their spirit animal that protect them.
Well.. they could also remove the character if they want an easy route.
Capcom did that with Norimaro in western version of Marvel Super Heroes vs Street Fighter.

In fact SEGA did that too with Pepsiman.

Ah, sorry that was Takashi Iizuka in Fighting Viper, the pic is supposed to be this...

Their legal team now just don't wanna leave their comfort zone.

How was Norimaro offensive exactly? He looks like a regular civilian in the wrong place at the wrong time, but likely holds his own in these fights with mostly luck over skill.

I knew about Pepsiman in Fighting Vipers but Takashi Iizuka in FV is entirely new to me. What's the story around that?

Offensive for Marvel comic fans .... at that time (now a joke fighting game was becoming norm).
Imagine you're an American and your might and proud superhero idol got beat by a Japanese comedian otaku who couldn't fight.
He won just by throwing anything he could find in his bag.
Some of his joke's move (like inserting his fingers on opponent's butt) also didn't sit well with westerner gamers.

It's actually Daichi Katagiri, one of the lead programmers of Fighting Vipers and Sonic the Fighter.
He's just trying his model on the game but forgot to remove it.
When his model was found in the game, nobody know who it is since he has no name, so people at the time just assume that it's Takashi Iizuka.
In the rare error, his name sometimes appeared in other character.

That honestly sounds funny. Imagine Batman being defeated by kanchō!

Oh that's an interesting tid-bit. So it was just a test fighter that wasn't removed, not an easter egg?
