Shogun 2: Total War
« on: May 28, 2010, 10:17:35 pm »
If you haven't been checking the front page, then there is the rumor that the CA game at E3 is Shogun 2: Total War.

Now I found this in TWCenter, it appears to be the PR, however, there is nothing to confirm whether its true or fake, but it looks pretty credible to me:
Quote
Title: Shogun 2: Total War™
Published by SEGA. Developed by The Creative Assembly.
Format: PC- DVD
1 to 8 players
Ratings: ESRB Teen, PEGI 16, OFLC M, USK 12 – All provisional
Release date: 2011
MASTER THE ART OF WAR TO BECOME THE UNDISPUTED RULER OF MEDIEVAL JAPAN
In 2000, the Creative Assembly re-invented the strategy genre with Shogun: Total War, an unprecedented blend of 3D real-time battles and turn-based management game and the first offering in the multi-award winning series. With over 7 million units sold and universal acclaim from the press and community, Total War has consistently been at the cutting edge of the genre and is today one of the most successful PC franchises of all time.
In 2011, the makers of Rome and Empire: Total War will release the sequel to the game that started it all. Shogun 2: Total War will take long-time veterans and newcomers alike to the next level of strategy gaming on PC. Based on 10 years of experience in making Total War, Shogun 2 is the perfection of the series with a new Artificial Intelligence (AI), revolutionary multiplayer modes, brand new campaign map options and epic 3D real-time battles.
It is the middle of the 16th century in Medieval Japan. The country, once ruled by a unified government, is now split into many warring clans. The player takes on the role of one Daimyo – the clan leader – and will use military engagements, economics and diplomacy to achieve the ultimate goal: re-unite Japan under his supreme command and become the new Shogun – the undisputed ruler of Japan.
Set during the golden age of Samurai warfare, Shogun 2 brings to life the most turbulent period of Japanese history.
Total War redefined
Shogun 2 is the ultimate refinement of the original formula with a new, cutting-edge AI, more polish and online functionality than ever before. The result is the perfect mix of real-time and turn-based strategy gaming that invites both veterans of Total War and new players to experience the enjoyment and depth of the series.
New character progression
Choose from 9 different clans and compete on and offline for the undisputed supremacy of Medieval Japan. Gain experience to level up your own character-warlord as well as your generals and agents.
A complete single and multiplayer offering
Play through the Main Campaign in single player or invite a friend online to play competitively or cooperatively in Campaign Multiplayer mode. Join 8-player multiplayer battles with your own upgradable avatar and climb the online Leaderboard to show the world who reigns supreme. Also including exciting new modes of team play for clans, a first in the Total War series.
New Generation AI system
Developed according to Sun Tzu’s principles in the Art of War, the Artificial Intelligence constantly analyses its situation and reacts to your every move with greater precision and variety.
Improved land and naval battle gameplay
Land battles never felt so realistic with new multi-staged castle sieges and terrain features changing according to the weather and time of the day - turning each engagement into a tactical challenge. Set buildings on fire to force garrisoned troops out and use your units’ special abilities to turn the tide of the battle.
Naval combat also offers more variety with the addition of coastal battles. Islands can work as effective cover for your ships, while sand bars and reefs can be used as traps against an enemy fleet.
Accessible and in-depth empire-building gameplay
A streamlined User Interface makes management of your kingdom much easier. Build and govern cities, recruit and train troops, conduct diplomacy and manage your agents – each feature is now introduced with comprehensive tutorials, gradually revealing the depth of the Shogun 2 campaign map – the heart and soul of the Total War experience.

Sounds like this time they are trying to Perfect the TW experince instead of bringing something new, I like how the PR emphasizes the A.I improvements... With Japan's small campaign map, I'm pretty sure they will have enough time to polish the A.I, especially the path finding... Anyway, I hope Jeff Van Dyck will also compose this game, without him, TW's soundtrack is nothing special.

A lot of people are freaking out about Shogun 2, so one of the people working on it tried to clear some stuff up about it.

Quote
Dear All,

Many thanks for all the excitement and support that Shogun 2's announcement has had.
We are genuinely excited about making Shogun 2 and have been for a while, the era, the units, all are absolutely excellent source material.

There are a couple of misconceptions about things here which it's best to address early in case they become received as fact.

Hero Units: - These are not one man armies that destroy everything that opposes them. These are highly ranked elite units, available at the top of the tech tree who exemplify a mastery of a given martial technique (E.g. sword fighting). They are able to take on other heroes, and are naturally very powerful against groups of enemies but are not invincible game-changers. These figures are also based on true historical accounts of great fighters who founded schools of combat, not myths that take on whole armies and win.

Scope: - We see the perception here. 'If it's not the whole world its not big'.

Try and imagine a vast string of islands from a feudal mindset.

Imagine your single province defended only against your rebellious neighbors.

Imagine an entire grand campaign map dedicated to a single country, a place where just a few miles to the east was a mountain range, shrouded in mist and run by a fearsome enemy or perhaps rolling rice plains able to supply you with vital resources if you could just reach out and take them...Beyond that? Only the darkness of uncharted territory and the promise of Kyoto.

Your armies would march for days and weeks to move across provinces. Imagine the savage mountain peaks and the rolling rice plains that create natural choke points and defensible positions. Imagine each conquest really feeling like a conquest, like you and your small band of warriors fought and won your latest prize allowing you to grow an army, and a reputation with it. Coastline stretching alongside you as you march into the unrevealed mists of rebel lands, seeking only glory and the title of Shogun.

The Japanese creation story is that the Gods dipped a spear into the ocean and as the water dropped from its point into the sea, it formed the islands of Japan.

It is massive, and it is epic.

Our thanks agin to all of you for your excellent and inventive ideas and theories and where we were going next.

Here's to Shogun 2.

Banzai!

Kind regards,
Kieran

Sounds good to me.

Most of the people bitching because the game is actually set in Japan.
A lot of TW fans only care about European history, and only got to the series from Rome Total War and Medieval and never actually played Shogun.

I personally thought Shogun was the second best TW game ever, and I really think this one is going to me amazing.

Also, some people are blaming Sega for the "Hero units" WTF  :|

The complaints are not because it is Japanese, but because it is ALL Japanese. Napoleon had France, Italy, Germany, Britain, Spain, Russia, and the Ottoman Empire (includes Egypt), and this was confused with being an expansion pack. See the difference?

At the end of the day, it all comes down to the way they do the map, they can make Japan just as big as empires was... All they do is zoom in and make the map of Japan huge and then split it into a lot of smaller provinces.

Where as in the empires map each country was 1 province. That way they can make it just as large as the Empires map.

Shogun 1 was only Japan too, and it ended up being awesome, The Map just like Sharky said, was zoomed in and was big enough.

That's why I think those who complain only got to the series after Shogun.

I am not arguing with this point as I think people are overreacting. What I agree with though is that it will just be Japanese fighting other Japanese. I know there were lots of different units and stuff, but it is still much more limited in this regard any way you look at it.
