Had an epiphany..
« on: March 19, 2015, 01:38:56 pm »
I'm at work, while calling people for Collections because they're running late on paying us for shit, something sort of just shot in my head.

Why hasn't Sega created a streaming service, or channel of sorts, where you can pay a monthly fee and play unlimited amounts of retro games? Some may think this is stupid, but i thought it would be a pretty awesome idea. Something along the lines of EA Access, where you pay $5-$10 monthly to stream games and play whatever you want. From retro SG-1000 games to modern games, i would definitely pay Sega monthly to play any game in their catalogue.

What do you guys think of this?

It's lame Sega America and Backbone stink.

The only true Sega compilations are by M2 (and the whole Sega Ages line post D3)

^Ah yeah I remember that now. You could even get a Mega Drive-esque controller when you signed up right?
It's been taken down now?

I feel like this is a good idea, something that has been talked about before (OnLive) and similar things are in play already like PSN+ where you pay a membership to play games.

Sadly I don't think it would be worth Sega's time to do something like this. Their modern games are too graphics intensive to 'Stream', and they don't release enough to warrant paying a monthly fee over just buying them on Steam/Green Man Gaming (particularly when they are on sale so often too).

Their old games can be played via emulator easily enough, or have been re-released so many times, everyone already owns them anyway. OR in the case of any game that's not mega drive, Sega probably lost the source code and they can't release it anyway, even if they wanted to. Back to emulation then. Or it's a Saturn game and the console is so hard to emulate they can't be arsed.

Subscribers got a free Saturn USB controller with PlaySEGA branding, only reason I joined. It was a decent pad, not as great as the original USB version, but far more affordable and I still use it.

In fact, I reviewed it back in 2009! http://the-nomad-junkyard.blogspot.com/2009/11/playsega-joypad-reviewed.html

Play SEGA was a great idea but executed badly... Felt like a side project of SEGA America as they flip flopped around throwing shit at the wall and hoping something stuck.

Ahh playsega, I remember that. Yeah it's similar, but I'm thinking on a bigger scale.

I think being able to pay a few bucks a month so I can stream all of the Yakuza's on my PS3 would be nice. I really like the idea of channels and paying to stream certain company games. I'm sure we'll be seeing more of them come up in the future.

Sonic the Hedgehog Level Creator was a great idea, too bad it wasn't fleshed out.

I love the pad too. Still using it to play M.U.G.E.N.
