Sonic SatAM is going to air on MeTV Toons during the week of SatAM's 33rd anniversary.

Quote
There was some confusion since some prior promotional material used either AoSTH or Underground.
But as you can tell from the description, mentions of Knothole and Sally Acorn confirm this is SatAM.
It would have been funnier if this was airing on a Saturday morning, but hey, a return is a return.
This is big since it's bringing a classic Sonic cartoon back into syndication. It could generate a new audience and allow Sega a genuine reason to capitalize on that interest, along with the nostalgia factor.
If this is your first time watching SatAM, or you're a prior fan wanting to relive it, that time is coming soon.

SEGA president says there's been a rise in "fans who don't play the games," and their engagement with IPs can be even higher than that of gamers

Quote
According to Utsumi, the company has in recent years seen an increasing number of fans who don’t necessarily play games. While he mentions this is true of all of Sega’s IPs, he singles out the Like a Dragon series as an example. Like a Dragon-related merchandise has been performing extremely well for Sega, with about 60-70% of customers being women. Utsumi explains that this layer of the fanbase often becomes acquainted with Like a Dragon’s story and characters through official YouTube content or by watching streams by popular content creators, and “many of them have never actually played the games.”
But even if someone has never played a game, Utsumi says Sega still considers them a fan and a “gamer.” The fact that people are growing interested in gaming franchises through different entry points is a benefit of Sega’s transmedia strategy, according to the president. Not only that, but Utsumi says that in some cases, engagement from such fans can be even higher than ...

It pains me to say this to say but Pokémon was a lot lot lot bigger franchise.
Pokémon is ranked as the highest-grossing media franchise of all time, generating over $130 billion to $150 billion in total lifetime revenue (for comparison the biggest SEGA franchise, Sonic, accumulated around $18 billion in lifetime).
I understand how big it was, but that didn't mean it still hasn't had decent contenders. Digimon was perhaps second popular to Pokémon, maybe followed by Yu-Gi-Oh. And while Digimon nor Yu-Gi-Oh were no where close to topple Pokémon from the throne of battle monsters, they were still big and noticeable contenders.
Reviews sadly have nothing to do with sales. Shinobi AOV got good reviews but sales are dissappointing
Yes, not everybody enjoy the multiplayer mini games route they take, but the ones that praised are Rabbids characters, not the gameplay.
In this day and age, when it's either metagame scores or sales, it's a bit confusing.
Yeah, I was wishing they came back after Sonic 3 movie, but Sonic 3 movie's being bombed in Japan (always wondered why though, it was a success everywhere else) shattered my wish.
I thought it was obvious why the Sonic films failed in Japan. Because the Sonic films are American. Despite Sonic being from an alien planet, he chose a small town in Montana, instead of somewhere just as good in Kanto, Chubu or Tohoku. he chose to adopt American language and culture and was adopted by American family.
I figured the reason why Sonic has been struggling and falling out of favour of the Japanese audience, the very country he originated from, is because he has become more Americanised for Japanese taste. I imagine it's why SoJ wants to enforce mandates over Sonic SoA has to abide to because SoJ probably feel they don't have much say over Sonic's personality and style any more.

It's why Sonic Frontiers was so popular in Japan because... well, Sonic Frontiers give me Studio Ghibli vibes.

Couldn't that be said for any fandom? That there are more people who don't play games over people who play games?

Digimon and  Yu-Gi-Oh! franchises start point don't far from Pokémon though.
Digimon franchise debuted in 1997 while Yu-Gi-Oh! and Pokémon in 1996 so both of them have time to catch up their rival.
Digimon did well to diffeentiate from Pokémon by doing different approach : narrative arcs that change characters each season/chapter/entry (anime/manga/game) and lean into darker, more mature themes as the audience ages.
Yu-Gi-Oh! TCG meanwhile did well to make it known for extreme complexity, massive combos, fast-paced matches, and the possibility of ending a duel on the very first turn while Pokémon features simpler, slower, and more affordable mechanics which make it remains vastly more popular for casual collecting.

They did try to make it having more Japan-related thing by using Tokyo as background and even changing the movie title into ソニック × シャドウ TOKYO MISSION (Sonic × Shadow TOKYO MISSION) for Japan market.
And still that's not enough.
But I guess you're right. It might be more succesful in Japan if the movie was based on Sonic Frontiers with its Studio Ghibli vibes.

Couldn't that be said for any fandom? That there are more people who don't play games over people who play games?

Yes, they are still target market. But of course fandom still means nothing if they don't spend their money to their franchise holders, that's why even though they don't play the games they can still support the company by buying their merchs.
The best selling SEGA merchs right now here in Indonesia are Persona and some of Persona fans who bought them came from the anime but they don't play the games since playing games aren't their hobby.

SEGA ATLUS Fest 2026 is happening now at SM North EDSA Philippines until September 13, 2026

Quote
As with previous SEGA ATLUS events in Manila, the 2026 event features big photo spots, with the most eye-catching ones being the massive inflatables of Sonic, Shadow, and Jack Frost.
While these inflatables will no doubt get the attention of mallgoers, these aren’t the only reasons to drop by. At the event, fans can take pics at more photo spots, including ones for the Persona series, Metaphor: ReFantazio, Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds, Hatsune Miku: Colorful Stage, and the Yakuza series. In particular, the Yakuza display is quite striking, as it features a recreation of the iconic Kamurocho gate.
Aside from photos, some of these booths feature ...
