New Status Update on ToeJam & Earl Movie Adaptation Shared

Quote
In a Reddit AMA, ToeJam & Earl co-creator Greg Johnson shared a progress update on the movie adaptation that was announced a few years back.
It seems things have stalled a bit in terms of movement, but the good news is that the film isn’t dead.
“I’m not 100% sure [if it will be live action or animated] as it’s out of my control but I expect it will probably be animated. I’ve read the script and really it could be either all animated, or it could be a mix like Sonic, as it’s primarily on Earth. I’m as curious as you are as to what they will do. Right now they are still looking for a director so things are a bit stalled out. Hopefully that train will start moving again soon. The guys are Story Kitchen are great.”
We last saw ToeJam & Earl on the ...

Yeah ... and this one somehow is popular and won Excellence Award in Japan Toy Award 2025

I noticed it seems to project Disney-related stories. I figured it would have bed time stories around Sonic & Friends, Puyo Puyo Happy or NiGHTS.
The SEGA Mushiking Arcade's game is indeed really popular but it has other big factor ... the cards that can be scanned in by a Mushiking arcade machine.
The card collecting thing was a huge trend (other example is Pokemon cards).
Well, no wonder since this trend is kinda using the same mechanism used in slot machines and video games with the "opening a pack of cards" thing.
You don't know what you're going to get, which keeps your brain engaged and chasing that “what if” moment.

But MushiKing has been around for so long, has its trend or popularity died down over the years?

Yes, I guess the target market is more familiar with Disney characters than video games'.

I would think so too but you still can find those arcade machines in Japan (and some Asian countries).
Same with other SEGA's card based game, Love and Berry.

I didn't know these guys were getting a movie!

Understandable if it went under radar since it's not released by SEGA but from T&J creator himself, Greg Johnson.

'Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle' just crossed $650M at the global box office, surpassing Superman ($615M)!

Now the highest-grossing international film ever in the U.S, and with a rumoured release in China, it could soar past $900M worldwide soon.

Oh well, not like I would buy it if it did had pre-school Sega content.

Hm, you'd think we'd heard more about it in the West. But then again, bugs aren't as popular here.

Will it be an animated special, or feature length?

I'm surprised it beat Superman!
What I like about the series is that I can keep up with it and has a linear storyline.

I used to like My Hero Academy, but I lost track somewhere after the arc involving the girl with the little horn, then there were spin-off films and I just lost the plot.

Kinda crazy since the movie had a budget of $20M but could earn $650M worldwide so far.
I rarely watched anime in Cinema but I've watched this one in cinema since it was really hyped in Indonesia and yeah ... it's really that good.

Oh well, not like I would buy it if it did had pre-school Sega content.

It would be beatiful if it could shows NiGHTS with this song

But still, it's very small market compared to Disney.

Japan really has different culture compared to the rest of the world.

The creator wanted it a mix like Sonic, as it’s primarily on Earth, but considering the budget it will probably be all animated.

I wonder what Ufotable will do with the money?

NiGHTS seems perfect as a children's bedtime story sort of character.

Yeah, bugs aren't that popular, and I imag9ine PETA will have a fit over finding out beetle fights are real.

Rather animated. live-action CGI is a bit of a gamble.

Make a sequel of the movie of course ... with higher budget.

PETA Indonesia is kinda different with the rest of the world.
They never went to war with others in social media and just quietly do their programs.
They has successfully rescued thousands of animals from abusive situations, usually dogs and cats.
That's why nobody hate them here.

Rather animated. live-action CGI is a bit of a gamble.

Yeah, I don't want the movie known for their bad CGI. Full animated is safer.

Isn't Demon Slayer series coming to an end though?

Oh wow! a branch of PETA that is actually responsible, competent and not crackpots!

That and such movies as Alvin and the Chipmunks, The Smurfs, Woody Wookpeckers, The Smurfs 2, most Disney films these days and Smurfs, show that CGI characters over live-action doesn't always work. Especially movies based on video games. However movies such as Rampage, Sonic and Detective Pikachu has proven it can be done, but the last two games did had some clout and funding to back them up.
