When Nintendo failed to secure the rights from King Features Syndicate in time, Miyamoto was forced to hastily swap out the characters.
Popeye became Mario the Jumpman, Olive Oyl became Pauline, and Bluto (Brutus) became Donkey Kong.

But Mario isn't Popeye though.
