Okay... Columns is like the hardest-working Tetris clone in the history of games. No one can accuse Sega of halfstepping when it came to pushing Columns on every format, even up until 2016.

I love the Columns music, the gameplay however is... not as deep as Puyo Puyo but it still is a unique puzzler.

Alien Syndrome is an awesome addition! I hope SEGA localizes this as a retail release or at least gives us the new games as digital eShop games.

Yesss !!! I played PC Port of Alien Syndrome a lot back then on my IBM PC XT with MS DOS 3.0.
Alien Syndrome port on Master System is rather dissapointing since it's different from arcade version.
Even the unofficial NES version of Alien Syndrome is better than the Master System version.

Unfortunately I have to agree that the NES version (by Sunsoft) was better. I believe it was officially licensed to Sunsoft, but then published by Tengen in the U.S. when Tengen was not an authorized publisher for the NES (after they rather notoriously acquired the design documents of the NES lockout chip to work around it).

I'm not sure why the SMS version of Alien Syndrome was changed so much. But the Game Gear version of Alien Syndrome was much improved.

Of course, the big news is Columns. I didn't think Shenmue III at E3 2015 could be surpassed, but I'm filming myself crying over here for my Youtube reaction video.

Oh my, I forgot that there was a game gear version. I have to try it out then.

Btw... Anyone remembered Columns III?
I'm  kinda disapointed with that version. Sure, it improves a lot, especially on multi player aspect, but gone are the Ancient Greek atmosphere and memorable backgorund musics. I don't know why SEGA decided to change the Ancient Greek atmosphere into Ancient Egypt atmosphere.

Plus, if it was Columns III we would get to have this guy on the cover:

Lol. That guy is nowhere to be seen on Japanese version packaging of the game.
I had the Japanese version (or Asian(?)) back then (chicks on the cover), so consider me lucky.
A game with a cover of a guy sh*t column bricks is too scary.

OMG... I thought that was just poor advertising art but then I saw the thumbnail image of the cover in the bottom right corner. Vic Tokai... what have you done...?!?!

Berto, when you said "chicks on the cover" I thought you meant women... then I go to Sega Power to see the cover and find out how literal you were being.

Yeah, that misleading thing is intentional. Lol.

Anyway, as for me multiplayer on Columns III isn't as fun as Columns Crown since there is only one attack pattern to your opponent (bumps your opponent's field up) compared to freaking 32 attack of Column Crowns.

Quote
1. Barrier - Creates a one-time defensive shield.
2. Copy - Copies the rival's magic gem power.
3. Delete - Clears many jewels from your field.
4. Exchange - Switches field with your rivals.
5. Freeze - Stops your rival from rotating.
6. Gray - Turns your rival's jewels gray.
7. Hell - Adds 2 rows to your side and 5 to your opponent's side.
8. Invisible - Hides your rival's jewel drops.
9. Jynx - Adds 2 rows to you & 4 to your rival.
10. Laser - Erases a column of rival's jewels.
11. Meteor - Drops black rocks on your rival.
12. Nora - Completely clears your field.
13. One More - Gives your rival 4-jewel drops.
14. Press - Removes three rows from your screen.
15. Quake - Shakes up your rival's field.
16. Reverse - Turns your rival upside down.
17. Speed - Speed's up your rival's drops.
18. Triple - Takes away 3 rows from your field.
19. Up - Bumps your rival's field up 2 rows.
20. Vacuum - Steals bar energy from your rival.
21. Wall - Creates a wall in the rival's field.
22. X2 - Doubles the next magic gem drop.
23. Yellow - Gives you only yellow jewels.
24. ? ? ? - Triggers a random gem power.

I remember the most fun way to annoy your opponent on Columns Crown is using Exchange attack. After you got that exchange magic gem, ruin your own field as worst as possible, then switch your ruined field with your opponent. Of course you had to make sure your opponent doesn't have that exchange magic gem first since he/she would exchange back when that's happened.

The downside of Columns Crown is you'll need two GBAs and two cartridges, while Columns III only need 1 cartridge and 1 console (plus multitap if you want to play 5 persons mode).

By far the best port of Alien Syndrome for any home platform was the X68000 computer version.

Glad to know that Arai love the 3D remake.

What was your reaction on seeing Thunder Force III revived for the modern age in 3D?

Arai: One of the things we focused on in the Thunder Force III development was a sense of depth in the backgrounds, which we achieved via many layers of parallax scrolling, and I felt that if any system was going to do justice to that, it would be the 3DS. Also, the Thunder Force series was something of a technical achievement for us, a result of pushing the hardware as far as we could, so I’m very happy to see it revived on a new system that also utilizes new technology.
