Sure, the Robotniks had access to unique technology, but they made it, it was unique to them. And given G.U.N. was not founded until after the first movie, well there's no excuse for sci-fi censorship over Maria's death.
Censorship still could come up in another way but we still didn't know how they will handle it.
Because it happened! And Sonic Team are trying to pretend it did not. Sonic Generations had the gun removed entirely and they dare not show any actual firearms, despite Shadow's game being their esponsibility!

The movie didn't show Jesus being crucified, but just because they're not showing it didn't mean it's happened.
It's still happened in the movie and we could know because it's been discussed by the disciples. Not everything have to be shown graphically.
I would argue with that... but then I remember the Mann brothers from Team Fortress 2. They're death now though.
