Always bet on Duke! Duke Nukem Forever lives?

You've waited 13 years already, so what's another few months? Reports are suggesting that the comically delayed and subsequently cancelled Duke Nukem Forever has been resurrected, with Borderlands developer Gearbox tasked with taking the project to the finishing line.

Having begun in 1997, development on Duke Nukem Forever had seemingly halted after the game's development staff at 3D Realms were let go in May last year. Due to 3D Realms failure to complete the game it was sued for breach of contract by publisher Take-Two, a matter that was resolved earlier this year.

But that's not where Duke Nukem Forever's story ends, it seems. A report on Kotaku suggests that Duke is alive and that Gearbox would be taking the game to completion. Sources at both Take-Two and Gearbox are remaining tight-lipped, although it wouldn't be the first time that the Borderlands developer was associated with the cigar-chomping action hero; Gearbox was outed as the company behind Duke Begins, a project that was scrapped before it ever saw the light of day.

The reports claim that more could be revealed at September's PAX, and that a playable demo could even emerge as soon as this year.

The story of Duke Nukem Forever is a strange and unique one – could this be the final twist in the tale? We'll bring you more as we hear it.

I can see Gearbox doing it justice. Everyone who has played early builds has said the game is amazing and a lot of it seemed like it was completed from what was released of those videos released last year, so it really could not be too hard to finish I would imagine.

Duke Nukem 3D is one of my favorite games ever, I would be extremely happy to see this turn out.

FUN FACT: The guy who voices Duke Nukem also was the original voice actor for Big the Cat. I get endless hilarity out of this.

Have you ever been a programmer before? If not, then yeah, you couldn't imagine.

Although, truth be told, the engine programming might already be complete. In which case, all they would have to do is finish the other aspects, such as the levels, the artwork, and so on. Seeing this game completed would be on the level of a Christmas miracle. ^^;;;

There's is no friggin' way this game will ever live up to the hype it has generated. It can't.

I think that game's source code is cursed, it's already cost 3D Realms their job, so Gearbox better watch it.

Yeah, I have been actually.

My point is that Gearbox is known for quality (I never played much of their stuff, but yeah!). I do not really see how they could make it suck, especially when they can just look at DN3D for inspiration... Or it's billions of fan edits.

The biggest reason the game has taken so long is they keep starting over. I think the engine it is on now was the third version of DNF.

I think the last ounce of hype this game had was, what, 8 years ago? This feels more like an urban legend now, if anything.

Almost tempted to say Dook Nyukem in the dark to the bathroom mirror now to see what happens...

2 years ago when the trailer was released the game rose to the top of most talked about charts, before that when that tiny screen shot was released.

Every time their is a drop of Duke News people go crazy, he is that powerful.

It's weird when you think about it. All right, Master Chief, an icon. Marcus Fenix, an icon in Gears of War. But Duke Nuken who stopped being relevant since like 1997, still seems to be something a lot people hold onto it. Heck, Matt Hazard is a parody of how a Duke Nukem would be like today.

Marcus Fenix isn't half of an icon as Duke.
Duke and Master Chief marked two different generations of gamers.

Why do people keep saying he's not relevant aside from the Mobile Games all his games have been received well.

Duke Nukem Time To Kill 98/99
Duke Nuke Land of the Babes 99/00
Duke Nukem Manhattan Project 2001

Manhattan Project was released this decade, and we have 5 Duke Nukem games in development currently DNF, DNB, and then there are the 3 games - trilogy - for DS/PSP...

How is he any less relevant than any other Alien Ass Kicker, that crappy Sega game Conduit, wasn't that also about a soul savior of humanity against Aliens as well.

Duke Nukem is simply the character of Doom, with Arnold Schwaznegger, Bruce Campbell and Clint Eastwood fucked into him.

"Give me some sugar baby" "Hail to the king" all lines directly from Bruce Campbell and since people are still dying for Evil Dead 4, Expendables (Arnie) and whatever Clint Eastwood is known for, how can Duke ever be anything less, he is the digital incarnation of all the Bad Ass Action movie Superstars!

Those two new portable games were canceled though.
I remember reading reports from some journalists stating that they did not believe the graphics in the DS version were even possible. There were some demos floating around some years ago.
