Sega Series - Hurt and then Fudged
« on: August 24, 2010, 04:11:04 pm »
I just got pissed off when I saw the news of Phantasy Star 2 being ported to the iPhone and it is the dated Genesis version from like 20 years ago.

A PS2 remake of the game exists

Phantasy Star: The original Rieko Kodama series from the Genesis are perhaps my favourite series on the system, I don't understand why Sega isn't distributing them worldwide, they are also not letting anyone else do it.

Quote
Originally slated for United States and European release by Conspiracy Games, it was later announced as a part of the Phantasy Star Trilogy, a compilation of the remakes of Phantasy Star, Phantasy Star II, and Phantasy Star IV. The compilation's future is uncertain however since Sega reclaimed the publishing rights for the United States and Europe. Sega currently has no plans to publish this or any of the other Phantasy Star remakes outside of Japan, and with Sega of Japan having seemingly abandoned their plans for a Phantasy Star IV remake in favor of a compilation featuring the original iterations of Phantasy Star I-IV, it would seem likely that this game will remain a Japanese exclusive.

I understand that making Skies of Arcadia 2 would not make commercial sense since the game has already failed commercially on 2 systems, but why not release the Phantasy Star games, they are already translated cause they were released in english for the MD/Genesis.

This just pushes me over the edge!

Phantasy Star II on PlayStation 2 is much worse and changes a lot of the story and art that really upset some of the fans.

The iPhone releases are all just cheap ports anyways. I do not think it is a major deal because I am just glad SEGA cares about the original series at all.

Yeah cube, chillax. It's a small port on a platform that is primarily a phone and app toolkit. If anything, it's easier for sega to make a simple port of the Genesis version and rely on nostalgia than spending money on a PS2 version port.

Really? The series is fucked? All because of a simple iPhone port that is no different from a WiiWare release?

Also keep in mind, what if it were to be a big hit? It is not like just translating Phantasy Star III on PlayStation 2 is possible because it does not exist. In this case SEGA would have dug themselves into a corner and everyone would have been even angrier!

The moral of the story is that Phantasy Star III is not very good.

@barry: I have been meaning to discuss this in the forum, and the iPhone port just brought the topic up.

@Cory: The trilogy was skipping PS3 and moving directly to End Of The Millenium, as far as I know PS2 has an unlockable alternate ending.

Rieko Kodama was involved in the project so you guys don't need to worry that much, but what you need to be pissed off about is that Sega isn't letting Conspiracy release it either.

Either release it yourself or get out of the fucking way!

P.S. I edited the title a bit

Am I the only one who wants to play the trilogy on Playstation 2 in english?

Good that Sega is not going to release that thing there.

It is not good. Believe me.

Better Sega is not letting anyone releasing it too ;p

Well... they will show, finally, the connection between Phantasy Star Universe and Phantasy Star Online in the newest Phantasy Star Portable 2 Infinity, and we know that there is a connection between Phantasy Star Online and the original Phantasy Star series.

I hope Sonic Team dont fuck with the original storyline, which was a bit fucked up by Sega of America on the translations to the English on the Mega-Drive era.

What is the connection between PSO and PS, in terms of storyline?

They occur in the same universe, though in different galaxies.

What's so bad about the generation version ?

It looked pretty nice in trailers and such, I'd imagine it just be the same game with a graphical update.

I think you mean different Solar System, as in the planet revolves around a different Sun.

That is as good as not having anything in common, but the games do have many of the old weapons, enemies and currency. Either way I booted PSO once back in the day and read the prologue and wondered what connection can this weird text have with End Of The Millenium(EOTM).

Even though all the games in the series were like a 1000 years apart with the exception (3: Generation of Doom; it takes place around the same year EOTM does).

I thought different Solar Systems first, yes. Then I went to Wikipedia for a quick check and it said Galaxies. I was not so sure of my first thought so I went with the Wikipedia article. :/
