Least favorite non-Sonic SEGA title/series?
« on: April 25, 2011, 03:44:07 pm »
Like the title implies, are there any games from SEGA that aren't Sonic games that you don't like that much?

I assume you mean out of their franchises? That is tough, are we looking at the overall franchise? If we are I never got much enjoyment out of Eternal Champions, it is okay, and definitely better than Killer Instinct, but it isn't Street Fighter.

I suspect you are looking for series that are otherwise quite popular amongst the fans.

For me it's Ecco... I never really got into it.

Really tough, as even if I don't enjoy one aspect of a SEGA franchise, I'll like something else... but if I had to choose I'd say Ferrari F355 Challenge or Toe Jam & Earl.

Ferrari F355 Challenge, I love the music, the graphics, the fact that Yu Suzuki was behind it. But when I've played it at the arcades, I'm shit. Maybe because I'm not used to realistic racers and need to get the Dreamcast version for some at home play.

Toe Jam & Earl, again I love everything about them except cannot understand how to play the game. Again, I'll have to force myself to give it a try again. Maybe I need to read a manual.

Yeah, Golden Axe is one of those franchises that weren't really that fun to begin with, they were hard as heck. I don't think they were that worthy of having a "Legendary Sega IP" moniker attached to it.

The first game is pretty hard and quite honestly I don't think I finished any of those, well except the Secret Level spin-off game that everyone hates.

Can't say I'm much of a fan of Bayonetta. No matter how much I try I just can't get into it.

Nights 2 didn't exactly give me a great impression of the Nights series either. But I haven't played the first one so that might be a bit unfair.

OWWWWWWWW. OWWWWWW. That hurts. I know people who consider that the best game of all time, and it's in my top 10.   The gameplay is kind of pointless, but so is every other games' really, the game is fun that's why I love it. I mean, you and I are playing Spiral Knights right now, why? Because it's fun, there doesn't seem to be much of a point.

I agree with this, it is a solid franchise in my opinion, but it is not Streets of Rage, nor Final Fight. It just simply wasn't as good as its' competitors during the same era, but I still feel they are fairly good games.

You didn't like Bayonetta?   Doesn't burn as much as CrazyTails' choice.

Ferrari F355 is very hardcore and very sim-like. It's not made for most people who want to go to the arcade and play OutRun or Daytona. I had a friend who is really into his racing sims try it out at the arcades and he was really impressed.

I think it's a real testament to yu Suzuki's skills that he can make arcade racers the quality of OutRun and then change gears and make a sim racer like F355 Challenge so high-quality as well. Truly amazing.

While I still think that Golden Axe isn't fun to play at all, it's not really fair to compare it to Streets of Rage. Golden Axe was from 1989 whereas SOR Came out 2 years later. They obviously had a lot to build on.

It IS fair to rag on Golden Axe 2 and 3 though, since they seem to get worse as the series goes on. Regardless, I just never have been able to have fun with Golden Axe, the hit detection and cheapo enemies are just no fun at all for me. I know Snaus will be here to defend it soon anyway, which is good because I'd like to see the opposite opinion.

RE: Bayonetta; I don't think we can be friends anymore.

RE: NiGHTS; NiGHTS 2 is a collossal piece of horse-shit. The first game is where it's at. That's like saying you don't like Sonic the Hedgehog because you only played Sonic 2006.

I don't really have a SEGA franchise I dislike, I've enjoyed every SEGA game I've ever played.

I do however want to say that I really enjoy the Golden Axe games, including the more recent installment. It seems like that is the game series people are picking the most as their least favorite.

I know that there is a great passionate fanbase for the series but Apart from the music and atmosphere, the gameplay doesn't really offer much that other games offer 10x better and fun. I think all you did was Flying around collecting and chaining points. I did find some enjoyment after doing it awhile and tried to do stages as slick as possible, but that only lasted for once or twice.

Flying around didn't bring much gameplay with it in a 2d view. A normal game would require some avoiding and beating. Nights kept it really simple and I just couldn't dig it.

The bosses were amazing, i'll give u that. But that's like the whole thing. The  game should've had that kind of challenge throughout the game of some sort. I am open to a lot of games in general, but I always want at least the feel of hastle/sruggle (fair struggle) going through a game.

I do recognize that it's an original game but if I have to pick game with a sense of flying in a game form, panzerdragoon is where it's at for me.

Giant Post

I pretty much agree with this, as a fan of racing sims F355 is absolutely fantastic. In regards to Golden Axe, I was just referring to the series overall, not a specific title within it. I never played three but I can still get enjoyment out of the first and second, they are solid enjoyable titles I think, just not great.

I chose Eternal Champions, I can get some basic enjoyment out of it but at best it's definitely just an above average game. Just thought of a SEGA title I cannot get any enjoyment out of though; Altered Beast. Am I the only one here who thinks so? Surprised nobody else mentioned it.

Painful heartbreaking post

This hurts worse than the first. The game is definitely about getting better and better scores through levels, but that creates a ton of replay value. When I first introduced a friend to SEGA he started with Sonic 2, which was actually the first game I ever played, and he ended up getting a Genesis. One time though, I was trying to do a video review of Nights Into Dreams for SegaFanatic, he happened to be over at the time and I was freaking out trying to figure out a way to properly classify and explain the gameplay. I took a break and passed the controller off to him and he pretty much instantly fell in love, if I were to call him and ask him for his favorite SEGA game of all time he would respond Nights, he might even say it was his best game of all time.

In regards to the review, I really couldn't describe the game in a manner I felt adequate about, so I gave up and we did Valkyria Chronicles instead, he co-reviewed it with me since he had already beaten it before too. It's on Youtube for anyone bored enough to watch a 8 minute VC review: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=12aM--goVvg
