So would you have Virtua Fighter 6 made on Unreal if you were in charge?

I think it would be cool if SEGA made their own high quality engine, like Unreal or Cryengine and leased it out the same way. Obviously it wont happen but I could really get behind that.

Yeah why not? Nothing wrong with that, it's better long term for costs and allows developers to focus on making the best possible gameplay changes.

As for game creation tools, too much time has gone past for SEGA to enter such a market, the really big boys want to keep stroking their egos and enter a graphical arms race that killed more developers than it should have and Epic has already taken the lower end market.

Just a little interjection real quick.

You can still buy a traditional UE license. Companies/developers are allowed to negotiate a custom license with payment upfront with Epic games if they so choose w/o percentage payments.

I would say that in many cases using Unreal is fine... But I guess I'm a bit of a snob when it comes to 3rd party engines, for certain games... I like the idea of build from the ground up in house especially for games like Virtua Fighter, Sonic and Total War. Other games I would be fine with SEGA using Unreal... Yakuza could probably benefit from it.

It's ok.

Sonic Boom's use of the Cryengine justifies such thoughts after the immense amount of PTSD it spread.

To be fair isn't that because of BRB having to cram the engine and assets on to the Wii U under a short period of time?

Yep Square Enix entered into a multi-year multi-license deal but didn't disclose anything else, I'm guessing the bigger the product and order the less you'll have to worry.

Also SEGA already endorses Unreal Engine 4.

(Yes it's only a tech demo but dragons are COOL okay?)

That's fine and all but it has it's draw back, Binary Domain didn't cost SEGA over $30 million for nothing you know, so in order to wow the crowd you have to put the cash down but then the product itself suffers, it CAN'T be a failure so it becomes more and more safe. The extra costs in R&D to make an engine could be better used somewhere else and that's why I wouldn't be opposed to them using Unreal Engine 4.

This month, don't know why Marza was playing around with it. Probably trying to get accustomed with new tech I guess.

It looks nice, the depth of field messes with my eyes a bit though.

As much as I think UE4 is excellent and probably the best thing to happen to JPN devs in years, I kinda want VF6 to run on AM2's own engine, one that is tailor-made to develop a 3D fighting game.  AM2 are tech wizards and I can't wait to see what they'd do with a current-gen VF.

UE also has source code access so it really isn't too different from developing an engine yourself either way. If you need to change something you can modify the source code.

Though as others have mentioned, I'm not entirely opposed to studios using their own engines(Such as Relic's Essence engine, or Sonic Team's Hedgehog Engine)

If SEGA were making games that looked as good as that Dragon tech demo id be all in for Unreal 4. EXCEPT with a select few games.

I think its funny that people are so reserve on using Unreal 4 to create Virtua Fighter 6, if anything, a engine like Unreal 4 would make the process of creating a one off 3D fighting game like Virtua Fighter 6 possible with a decent budget. It made sense in the 90's for SEGA to create a 3D engine fighting game, because it was the next logical step. Street Fighter II dominated and fighting games where absurdly popular, SEGA put all their money into production of their 3D fighting game.

Then they used that texture engine and stuff to create a ton of fighting games around the same time. They got their money's worth for sure. Sadly gaming isn't like that anymore. You can't create a specific engine for 1 fighting game. I know "Make more fighting games", yeah, that's an amazing dream right there. SEGA can't even get VF5 to sell like it used to.

It would be a lot cheaper to use Unreal 4 as a base and have the creators make tools to create the fighting engine. There still needs to be a method to their madness. Unreal 4 also makes porting to consoles, PC super easier and more cost friendly.

Like they said, Unreal has come a long, long way from Unreal 3.

Why assume AM2 will build an entirely new engine for VF6?  They can modify and build upon the VF5 engine... Similar to how Naughty Dog is using a modified version of their last gen engine on Uncharted 4.
