When they say they're having a sale, it means for games on their platform (Switch and Switch 2).
Almost all of the sales are third party games, like Sonic Frontiers, Hogwarts Legacy, or Skyrim.
Hell, even Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope: + Rayman Edition is a third party game.
It's published by Ubisoft.
Other Mario games aren't on sale.

That's why publishers are unlikely to make the full-priced game became free even for just few days on Switch, XBox, or Playstation (like they do on Steam) or has 95% off sale since they still got to pay to the platform holders based on the first price and ESRB/PEGI based on how popular the franchise is.

Hm... This makes me wonder if, lore/story-wise, the first Mario Kart game took place on Mario Kart World island, but SNES graphics at the time was limited.

That's a possibility but not just graphic that's limited, memory too.
After all they don't have ... blast processing.
If graphic's the only problem, they could make the island just like how in Toejam and Earl.
