Been keeping my eye on this one for a few months now.  It's looking fantastic!  It would be great if more artists would use the HiSMS emulator to do these remakes.  Unfortunately it's not a well-known emulator, and the author doesn't support it anymore.

I like how they've used Alex Kidd's Japanese artwork as the main sprite. I hope they can finish it without giving up. I would love to play Miracle World again in HD.

Update: Posted on the front page with more footage. http://segabits.com/blog/2012/12/27/alex-kidd-in-miracle-world-in-hd/

Now this is what you call a perfect remake. They could have made it all beautifully animated with todays standards but they didnt, for the better. Its got the exact same charm i loved from the origin because of it. Tbh this seems like an amazing project that sega should pick up imo

^More likely Sega will slap a 'Cease and Desist' order on them.

That's more like Nintendo to me.

I loved the Genesis classics (Smash Pack) on the Dreamcast. It was a great thing as the same coder who wrote the emulator for the Dreamcast was Steve Snake who also used to be the main coder who made the Genesis emulator for the PC known as Kgen. Still active even today with different emulators.

While the use of Alex Kidd may bring issues, Sega in general, has been more receptive to the emulators written over the years, even bringing them on board for much later projects and getting into better positions in the game industry. Last I known was his work at Digital Eclipse, a company well known for bringing classics to newer systems.

My last favorite was Phantasy Star collection on the game Boy Advance. Sadly missing PS IV, being able to have three awesome Sega RPGs on a GBA cart was still a bargain at new retail of twenty bucks
I despise ignorant fanboys. Enjoy the great games on all systems or platforms. There is no reason for blind hate...

Not actually possible with this emulator -- it's an emulator that allows you to replace the original sprites with images that are 4x higher resolution.   So it's still limited to the same number of frames of animation.  But like you said, it works very well as it is.

One interesting thing about the HiSMS emulator is that you have to play through the game to rip the sprites, you can't just do a bulk sprite dump.  So you know, especially with a tough game, that the person doing the update has really worked for it!

By the way, this is one person doing the remake, not a team.

i really like the concept. but if u would aslk me
what would be your negative point of the game. id say alex kidd should look more like the 8 bit

cause honestly the 8 bit alexkidd has allready reached his perfection. so makin him different is a staircase lower.

but in overall im happy with the game. we should give the guy props

*Looks at this alex kidd.   Looks at the nightmarishly ugly alex kidd in Racing Transformed.*

I love Racing Transformed but these guys seriously need to get a better character modeler.

Also this project looks amazing.  Hopefully it gets some official support and an actual release!

Anytime ;) We had to spread the word even further to other Sega fans about this awesome project. May I ask, how much do you have to finish with the project. I would love to play Alex Kidd with enhanced graphics again.

I'd like to use these videos also to motivate people to create more HiSMS hacks.
I don't understand how this amazing tool is still so obscure after four years.

I'm not sure but I guess my hack is 40 to 50% done. The original game reuses many sprites over and over (pretty much like the original Super Mario Bros.). And it surely helps to speed things up.

My *real* problem here is the release of this hack. I can't release the Rom because game code and music are properties of Sega.
I would have to create a patch containing only my graphics (and I still don't know how to do it).
Or Sega could embrace this project and release it officially (which is next to impossible).

Thanks again and sorry about my bad English (my native language is Brazilian Portuguese).

If Sega was to release it officially, they'd also have to work out a deal with the author of HiSMS... if that person can even be found.  But anything is possible!
