SEGA president says there's been a rise in "fans who don't play the games," and their engagement with IPs can be even higher than that of gamers

According to Utsumi, the company has in recent years seen an increasing number of fans who don’t necessarily play games. While he mentions this is true of all of Sega’s IPs, he singles out the Like a Dragon series as an example. Like a Dragon-related merchandise has been performing extremely well for Sega, with about 60-70% of customers being women. Utsumi explains that this layer of the fanbase often becomes acquainted with Like a Dragon’s story and characters through official YouTube content or by watching streams by popular content creators, and “many of them have never actually played the games.”
But even if someone has never played a game, Utsumi says Sega still considers them a fan and a “gamer.” The fact that people are growing interested in gaming franchises through different entry points is a benefit of Sega’s transmedia strategy, according to the president. SEGA ATLUS Fest 2026 is happening now at SM North EDSA Philippines until September 13, 2026

As with previous SEGA ATLUS events in Manila, the 2026 event features big photo spots, with the most eye-catching ones being the massive inflatables of Sonic, Shadow, and Jack Frost.
While these inflatables will no doubt get the attention of mallgoers, these aren’t the only reasons to drop by. At the event, fans can take pics at more photo spots, including ones for the Persona series, Metaphor: ReFantazio, Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds, Hatsune Miku: Colorful Stage, and the Yakuza series. In particular, the Yakuza display is quite striking, as it features a recreation of the iconic Kamurocho gate.

Netflix and SEGA Announce Crazy Taxi Movie, Stranger Than Heaven Film, and a New Animated Sonic Series

The partnership includes a new animated Sonic the Hedgehog series for upper preschoolers, blending high-voltage comedy with emotional depth, produced by Sonic movie veterans.
