I know Rare is famous for Donkey Kong Country and Banjo-Kazooie but they already made many games before that.
Last year, there's Rare Collection 1 released for arcade that contais 12 games.
Pretty sure you won't recognize many games among of these 12 games other than Battletoads and Conker.

Some of them look a bit familiar to me, but I didn't know them by name.
No wonder SEGA refused to bring Shining Force III Ep2 and 3 to the western.
Well, Shining series in general is still popular.

Well, Shining series in general is still popular.

Funnily enough, while the original trilogy were considered the best, my favortite Shining game is the latest one, Shining Resonance Refrain.
The review might not be good and the combat might be boring, but I love its atmosphere, character development, and most of all ... music.
The characters were all unlikable at the beginning at the game (boneless MC, daddy issue girl, stiff priestess, etc) but the more we play they changed into their better-selves.
And the music are charming. Some of them are beautifully calming ... especially when it's raining.

So it's like the first Virtua Fighters game, but with fighters from later games?

Might have to get a PS2 emulator, in this case.

Which Shining game would you recommend for someone starting out?

Shining Force I and II for Mega Drive.
If you want the story pick Shining Force I, but for gameplay pick Shining Force II since it's considered more welcoming for newcomers due to modern conveniences.
Both are good in their own waty though.

The first Shining game, Shining in the Dark, is kinda 'difficult' to play now since it doesn't have auto map function.
Back then it's normal for game to be that way (even the first Phantasy Star were like that) but right now it feels time-consuming to map a dungeon manually so that's why I don't recommend it.

So it's like the first Virtua Fighters game, but with fighters from later games?

Yes, new fighters for VF2, VF3, and VF4 added except one: Taka Arashi, the sumo fighter.
May be his sprite is too big too handle for the game.

Shining Force I and II were top-down tile turn-base, was it?

It got me thinking of Virtua Quest. Do you think it's a game that should be given another chance?

Yes, it's a strategy RPG.

I don't enjoy it so I don't. I already like the direction they have right now with the new Virtua Fighter.

I just think, what if it had a sequel that covered its flaws with fixes? Or what if they went with a Sega All-Star approach than just Virtua Fighter.

Either way, Virtua Quest is likely non-canon anyway.
