That's cool and all, but MUGEN itself still looks rather dated. Which, granted, some may like that as an aesthetic. But in comparison to Street Fighter 6, Mortal Kombat 1 or Marvel Tokon, fans of MUGEN means they can't have fighting games that quality, while still being highly customisable and protected from corporates.
Well, what do you expect for engine that was released 27 years ago?
At that time the fans want is just what if Street Fighter characters could fight against Mortal Kombat or Guilty Gears characters or any character that hasn't been in fighting games?
And there are already thousands characters, stages, and music we can use (if we knew where to look of course) and even edit them ourselves for balancing or changing the move inputs.
It's never about graphic, it's about gameplay.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sZ2qTaMbWf0M.U.G.E.N veterans like Walruslui and Kamekaze helped 4CYDE Studios to make SEGA vs. Capcom: the Next Level btw.
But for those who wanted good graphic, there's also another new fighting engine : IKEMEN GO.
Unlike M.U.G.E.N builds which lack native online multiplayer, IKEMEN Go features built-in rollback functionality for smooth online matches.
It also supports true 3D stages, stage zooming, WebM video intros, dynamic resizing, and even Android support.
And the best thing of it, M.U.G.E.N files and content can be played in Ikemen GO, as the engine is designed for backwards compatibility with M.U.G.E.N.
4CYDE Studios uses this IKEMEN GO btw for SEGA vs. Capcom: the Next Level.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dv0aC8CKFpkFor full 3D fighting, there's also Infinite Versus which is built as a 3D fighting game engine rather than a traditional 2D one.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1FGBovSCq4sI just hope 4CYDE would still make use of what its salvageable of Sega vs Capcom, and I don't mean like when My Little Pony: Fighting is Magic just replaced everything other than the gameplay to make Them's Fightin' Herds, I mean at least make a Sega fan game out of it.
But it sounds like 4CYDE are abandoning fan games for original projects, which feels like, other than "experience" and "exposure", a waste of Sega All-Stars content and interest.
There's still risk that SEGA's gonna send C&D if they continue with the project.
Just because they didn't do that in the past doesn't mean they won't do that in the future. They have the right to do that after all.
The thing with 4CYDE Studios is they're like Ikarus, they're close to the sun.
I mean ... the game got promoted by Maximilian Dood, a famous FGC influencer who's close to CAPCOM.
Other FGC influencers have reminded the developer that "flying under the radar" is usually safer than heavily marketing a project. So many Megaman fan games are still safe from CAPCOM because they kept low.
