I've been wanting this for awhile! It should've been a feature for Sonic Origins.

I still don't get the hype over this. It's just Pico Park reskinned.

Hell, I'm starting out with Godot. if i locked-in, I could probably make Pico Park from the ground up.
Digimon and  Yu-Gi-Oh! franchises start point don't far from Pokémon though.
Digimon franchise debuted in 1997 while Yu-Gi-Oh! and Pokémon in 1996 so both of them have time to catch up their rival.
Digimon did well to diffeentiate from Pokémon by doing different approach : narrative arcs that change characters each season/chapter/entry (anime/manga/game) and lean into darker, more mature themes as the audience ages.
Yu-Gi-Oh! TCG meanwhile did well to make it known for extreme complexity, massive combos, fast-paced matches, and the possibility of ending a duel on the very first turn while Pokémon features simpler, slower, and more affordable mechanics which make it remains vastly more popular for casual collecting.

While Digimon and Yu-Gi-Oh were a bit earlier than Pokémon... well, Nintendo fans seem to get the impression Nintendo are the first of a few genres when really been around for awhile. Smash Bros. was not the first platform fighter game out there, but it was likely the game that made it known.

But it still proves my point the potential of Chao Gardens. A potential that Sega has chosen to squander.
They did try to make it having more Japan-related thing by using Tokyo as background and even changing the movie title into ソニック × シャドウ TOKYO MISSION (Sonic × Shadow TOKYO MISSION) for Japan market.
And still that's not enough.
But I guess you're right. It might be more succesful in Japan if the movie was based on Sonic Frontiers with its Studio Ghibli vibes.
I can tell Sonic Team are trying to reconnect with Japan here and there, but it will be difficult for them given Sonic has become so "Americanised" over the years.

Yes, they are still target market. But of course fandom still means nothing if they don't spend their money to their franchise holders, that's why even though they don't play the games they can still support the company by buying their merchs.
The best selling SEGA merchs right now here in Indonesia are Persona and some of Persona fans who bought them came from the anime but they don't play the games since playing games aren't their hobby.

I guess in a way, I am, or was a fan of Overwatched, despite the fact I never purchased or played the game itself. The game itself just doesn't look like my kind of thing at all. But I enjoyed the animations and story around it. Even read a few of the comics.

I was hoping Overwatch will at least make a feature-length fully-animated video, or the very least a sizeable series of 11-minute videos. But i think Overwatch fame has died out.

True, should've been in Origin. SEGA doesn't how many people feels nostalgic with this, as nostalgic as hearing the Green Hill theme.

Hey, Pico Park is fun multiplayer game. It adds Spin Dash which really affects the simple gameplay, while also adding classic Sonic-style gameplay elements such as rings, loops, and springs!

No, read again, the Digimon (1997) and Yu-Gi-Oh (late 1996) were a bit later than Pokémon (early 1996), not a bit earlier, that's why they have time to catch up.
I think The Outfoxies was the first famous platform fighting game, but it's not as fun as SSB.

I can tell Sonic Team are trying to reconnect with Japan here and there, but it will be difficult for them given Sonic has become so "Americanised" over the years.

I'm really surprised to know that Sonifure (Sonic and Friends) is a succesful thing in Japan, the plushies and merchs sold well.
I mean the brand (Sonifure) doesn't even have a game, not even a simple mobile game.
May be when SEGA president says there's been a rise in "fans who don't play the games," and their engagement with IPs can be even higher than that of gamers is also because of this.

I guess in a way, I am, or was a fan of Overwatched, despite the fact I never purchased or played the game itself. The game itself just doesn't look like my kind of thing at all. But I enjoyed the animations and story around it. Even read a few of the comics.

You should buy the merch too, at least one Overwatch keychain or mug, so you became the fan the SEGA president talked about.

True, should've been in Origin. SEGA doesn't how many people feels nostalgic with this, as nostalgic as hearing the Green Hill theme.
The Sonic World feature is also highly-packed with aesthetic and nostalgia for Classic Sonic.

Yeah, but I still wouldn't hype up the anniversary around it.

I think The Outfoxies was the first famous platform fighting game, but it's not as fun as SSB.

Oh, I thought Digimon was older than Pokémon.

But... Megami Tensei! That's technically a game about collecting monsters and battling them! And that came out in 1987!

And didn't Dragon Quest V (1992) also had a monster recruitment mechanic?
I'm really surprised to know that Sonifure (Sonic and Friends) is a succesful thing in Japan, the plushies and merchs sold well.

I'm not surprised Sonifure is doing well. they look like Hello Kitty characters.

They're not sold in my area. Besides, I was a fan. I pretty much lost track of the story, if there is even still one, after one character after another was introduced. And I dunno if all of them had hero Trailers.

But, one thing I do like about Overwatch, is that it proves you don't need a big budget for cinematic masterpiece. I bet the Warcraft movie would've been just as good as well as saved money, if the animation studio behind Overwatch made the movie.

Oh wow! It's ready to play? Cool!

Though, I hope KumaPauZ will rename the project soon. I mean, it's no longer a project now that it's near it's finished state. And given what the game was originally called, I hope he will rename it "Sonic and the Secret Rings: Reignition" or something like that.

The Sonic World feature is also highly-packed with aesthetic and nostalgia for Classic Sonic.

Yeah, it's also showing Sonic OVA ad. My Sonic Jam game was Japan version though, did they change the Sonic OVA ad into Sonic TV series and SatAM ads in the west version or still Sonic OVA?

Yeah, but I still wouldn't hype up the anniversary around it.

This game wasn't meant as a 30th anniversary game, it's just a coincidence that it's released in 2026 so the marketing team added it into the 30th anniversary campaign.
Because by that logic, if it's seen only by the year it's released, Sonic Boom: Fire & Ice (the only Sonic game that was released in 2016, not counting Olympic series) will be the 20th anniversary game.

Oh, I thought Digimon was older than Pokémon.

But... Megami Tensei! That's technically a game about collecting monsters and battling them! And that came out in 1987!

And didn't Dragon Quest V (1992) also had a monster recruitment mechanic?

Megami Tensei series is a mature game, not for all ages, different target market.
Some Dragon Quest and Lufia games did have a monster recruitment mechanic, but those franchise are already good enough they would still sell even without it.

I'm not surprised Sonifure is doing well. they look like Hello Kitty characters.

Okay, now I understand why Sonic Pico Park is a full game instead just a DLC for Pico Park, they tried to make Sonifure and Hello Kitty fans to play Sonic games. With those chibi design, they are the main target market.

They're not sold in my area. Besides, I was a fan. I pretty much lost track of the story, if there is even still one, after one character after another was introduced. And I dunno if all of them had hero Trailers.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FqnKB22pOC0

Thing that I can't understand that even though Warcraft movie was a box-office failure in the United States but it was a massive hit in China.
I guess every country has a different taste.

Oh wow! It's ready to play? Cool!

Though, I hope KumaPauZ will rename the project soon. I mean, it's no longer a project now that it's near it's finished state. And given what the game was originally called, I hope he will rename it "Sonic and the Secret Rings: Reignition" or something like that.

I don't know. I think Project Reignition still sounds cool to my ears, I like it.
