Yeah, that's what most people thought that became some meme and jokes back then.

Because she seems popular enough to be recognised internationally, I figured she had some lore going on. She seems more popular than the product she's mascotting herself.
Sonic Team Head Says Franchise Is Only Halfway to Full Potential After 35 Years

Half-way? Since when? Their downfall after the Dreamcast?

Well, what's another 35 years I suppose.

It's thanks to internet-driven user-generated content, her striking design, and the viral spread of early music on Nico Nico Douga.
Crypton Future Media marketed her as an approachable canvas rather than just a locked-down corporate product, allowing independent producers to create and share hits freely
Basically ... internet is the one who made her famous.

Sonic was briefly more recognizable among children in the United States than Mickey Mouse during the early 1990s (specifically around 1992–1993), according to historical market research and Q Scores.
That's his potential.
Sadly he could not maintain his popularity in mid and late 1990s.

It is admirable in a way, given lots of Japanese marketed content rarely get as popular as Miku internationally.

Yeah! The '90s was pretty much when Sega peaked! They tried to make a mascot better than Nintendo, and they succeeded! They released the Mega Drive solely to compete with the NES, and Nintendo brought the SNES to the table, but the Mega Drive still held its own! And because of that, Sega became just as much of a corporate titan as Nintendo was at the time. The "90's Console Wars" between Sega and Nintendo were still famous to this day. Sega of Japan may not had approved of Sega of America's marketing methods, but the high risk - high reward worked for Sega well during the '90s!

But if your kids had any of their young friends over and you told them "Sega were just as much as big as Nintendo was" or "Sonic was as popular as Mickey Mouse or Mario", would they believe you? Granted they would perhaps be too young to know such words as "subsidiary" and "third-party", but while Sega still retain their popularity, being a subsidiary that mostly produce games over making them, they're just not one of the titans as Nintendo, MicroSoft and Sony Entertainment.

Actually they'll believe me if I told that since they're boys.
Sonic Ranks No. 2 afterall for Boys’ Favorite Characters.
Though Sonic and SEGA is widely known and popular here among boys but mostly for meme reason.
This is one of most popular meme in Indonesia :

This rude meme's usually used social media users to calm down (or also mock) others who're too fast to get angry in an argument.
There's one time that official Sonic the Hedgehog SEA (South East Asia) page got flooded with these meme in the comment session which's really annoying.

What does it say in English? The joke may be a bit over my head.

But still, with today's Sega being a subsidiary of SegaSammy, who may or may not considered axe-ing Sonic at one point, compared with Mario who has the whole Nintendo corporate empire behind him, it's hard to believe Sega will ever catch up to Nintendo ever again.

The word behind is a rude curse word and the word in front means "stay calm, man".

Yeah, the only chance to catch up if somehow Nintendo make a very big big blunder which is I doubt it could happen seeing how careful they always were.
Still, seeing the history of Nokia and Blackberry, no company is too big to fail.

In a way, they did make a blunder with the price of the Switch 2 and its game in todays market. Sega could've striked then, but they didn't. Now Nintendo seemed to have recovered (most) of it's reputation by now.

Blunder but not fatal and easily manageable. Switch 2 and it games (first party at least) are still selling out like crazy. That's not enough. The blunder has to as big as ... uh, caught cheating, like how The Coleco Chameleon console's caught that it did not use a true FPGA-based architecture as promised; instead, its public prototype was exposed as a Super Nintendo Junior (SNES Jr. / Model SNS-101) motherboard hidden inside an Atari Jaguar plastic shell. After independent engineering audits revealed the fraud, Coleco Holdings formally pulled its brand licensing, and Chameleon console project was permanently canceled (and sadly along with its planned games : new Ecco the Dolphin and Eartworm Jim 4).

True, but, Nintendo having fixed prices that today's customers would find too much, and Sega often having discounts, wouldn't that make Sega more approachable over Nintendo?

That's the logic thinking, but in the realm of hobby like action figures, comics, and video games ... people's sense of money are really different.
Nintendo fans are really that loyal that they don't care about sales for first party games.
