Ueda-san was the director for the 1st Yakuza games

According to the credits, it is Hiroyuki Sakamoto.   Ueda directed the second game.

Yeah, and for the past five years any time a new one is announced

That's fair enough. Don't try and make out that I never liked the Yakuza series . I did for the PS2 sadly the series has been milked to death and seriously gone downhill since those good days imo

Don't even go there if you're thinking that creating damaged environment art for Dead Souls is quick and easy. I work in 3D. It's a pain in the ass and a lot of work to break models. So how much weight do you expect your opinion to have? In any case, you've made your point ad nauseum.

I'm sure you've got views on films , what next unless you've directed a film you can't comment . We all here seem to post views on consoles both good and bad, yet how many of us have worked in a console R&D section . Don't give that load of bullshit

Don't have to work in the industry to know that yearly development cycles means there's little room for major improvements.

If what you're saying is factually inaccurate, expect to be called out. I'm saying don't downplay the amount of work that goes into each title. For years you've been honking about each game re-using the same assets, as if all that changes are the missions. Every single game has had huge new areas added to it, which you'd know if you played them. For some reason you seem to have a real chip on your shoulder against this series, which is weird since it's a highly successful, very creative and yes, very Sega series.

Yep and this doesn't use the same assets either. You can make the same map but still have completely different assets, its like looking at the Sonic 1 and Sonic 2 Sonic sprites and saying their the same graphic because they look similar. The ones in Yakuza 6 are more detailed than previous ones, that's a new asset.

Infact it has new moves and animations too, Kiryu no longer has his standard square square square triangle triangle move anymore OR it's a completely different animation as he does a roundhouse kick instead now. Nor does the graphic's "downgrade" at anyone point since it streams along from the same scene. It's pretty obvious to see this is a huge step forward from the high quality stream SEGA just released: http://segabits.com/blog/2016/01/27/yakuza-6-demo-playthrough-now-available-hd/

Ah those overhead bars doe.

Half me likes them, half of me hates them, and for the exact same reason: They remind you that this is a video game.

Huh... Guess you can't always trust MobyGames.  Sorry for the misinformation.

But Sakomoto did direct F-Zero GX, right?

Yakuza reminds you that you're playing a game all the time, for me that's not the problem. The problem is that it simply looks bad. I keep getting reminded of Dinasty Warriors or something.

I preferred the specific enemy's health bar being on the top, though I think it'd be neat to be able to swap between the two options.

I get what you mean, but in Y5, aside from the QTE prompts front and center, it's pretty easy to ignore all the indicators that you're playing a game as they tend to be around the edges of the screen. There's a high standard of immersion there. Those overhead bars in the Y6 demo are impossible to ignore.

In one way it's cool as it signals the fight and takes me back to the time of arcade beat'em ups, and I kind of like how the stories and events in the series are surreal and could only happen in a game world. The overhead bars reinforce that feel.

But, it kills immersion. I'm pretty sure I'd still feel engaged, but no longer immersed. Does that make any sense? Anyways, I'm leaning towards not digging the overhead bars. Everything else in that demo is stunning.

Hey at least we know what time this game takes place in now, since Haruka looks to be more or less the same age as she appears in Y5. Please, please let Akiyama be in this game!

I think the way they handle the items that you can pick up and use weapons is good. If you get near a bicycle or street sign or something, it kind of subtly flashes/glows. Maybe they could do something like that with an enemy - if you're facing an enemy, they could briefly glow or be outlined with a color that indicates their overall health. I dunno... with basic street fight enemies I never really bother to look at their health bar. It's only ever of interest in a serious boss fight.

The full demo playthrough.

- Fully real time, nothing per-rendered. If anyone wants to debate this point, notice how Kiryu's top stays bloodstained between gameplay and cutscene.
- No loading at any point, random battles, venturing into buildings, no loading at all.
- Every NPC is fully voiced, maybe the end of the textbox is nigh.
- Environment physics look great, destroying stuff, yes even stuff in shops, stay destroyed.
- There seems to be some sort of stomach aspect to the gameplay?
- Powerups/recovery items might not be consumable from the start menu anymore.

Overall, looks awesome, now super hyped for the game.

The gameplay looks really simplified, don't know why they messed around with the core mechanics of heat moves. That's my biggest worry, really hope they fix it cause the generation leap is really noticeable here. And Kitano's post credit black screen ominous line really sets him up as the main villain.

Also, Haruka is mai waifu.
