Interview: Why Amplitude Studios had to leave SEGA

Quote
Gamesindustry: When Amplitude exited from Sega. How exactly did that come about?
Romain de Waubert de Genlis (studio co-founder) : What we were doing within Sega was quite unique. When we looked at the strategies that they had – with a strong focus on their core IPs, consoles, mobile when they bought Rovio – it was like, 'We definitely do a lot of PC, we don't really have a core Japanese IP, we are not very mobile…'

Did you feel that unless you left Sega, there was a chance the studio could have been closed?
No. Maybe reductions of headcount could have happened, but that's not what triggered it. What triggered the situation is we were just not aligned at all on what to do in the future or what our strengths were compared to Sega's.

Do you think Sega was withdrawing to its core IPs and focusing on mobile?
I don't really want to talk for Sega, but I think if we step back and look at the state of the industry during a crisis period – which we were in, are in, and are hopefully exiting – when you go into a crisis, you go defensive. You focus on your core strengths and what you've been known for. And Sega had all these elements, except mobile, which they had just bought and was an investment. They need to have a payback on that, right? They need to invest in that, they need to make sure it works.
But it's not like someone came and told us, 'Hey guys, we just made a plan, and you're not in the plan, what do we do with that?' What happened is they made the plan, we were looking at how we fitted into it, and it was hard for us to see how we could. It was more us that came to them and said, 'Well, guys, really, I don't see how it's going to work.'

So when it came to leaving Sega, was it you who initiated it?
Yeah, it was me, but it took nearly a year and a half. That's including me trying to understand how I would finance it, and how I would present it to Sega. That took a year actually, so it was a lengthy process, and ...

Marvel Puzzle Quest also has its own problems though.
At first both PC and Mobile version ran simultaneously well but after some time mobile version got more treatment.
For example mobile version get free promotions all the time while PC version do not.
I guess it's making sense from nusiness point since mobile version has more players than PC version.
True, but, again, the PC version of Marvel Puzzle Quest is still available so even if the mobile version is done and gone, players can still play the game as it is.
Sega Heroes does not have that luxury. Even if a PC version of Sega Heroes lack all the new features and events the mobile version has, I at least would be able to play the game today on PC if it had a release.
Mobile gamers tend to pick the later ones though.
There are many games that now let you auto grind once you had cleared the stage once so it's not about time-consuming chores thing anymore but it's more about "lives".
They had finite "lives" (that refreshed every hour/hours) so there's a restricition on how many times we can auto-grind.
Of course we can spend real money / in-game money to buy more "lives" but that's only for whales or if we are not patient.
I guess I simply don't like premium games, the very creation of it.
You can just "buy" a game once and it will have all the features. Sure, some games are free and may require regular payments via a subscription or free games have limited "free sample" features and require a payment for all the game to be available.

But when Freemium games were released, they were design to barely be games and more of means for money. And granted some of these games can be fun, they are design to be barely fun to encourage players to spend money.

Marvel Puzzle Quest for PC would be disappeared too if the mobile game version is ending its service.
The offline version (MPQ Dark Reign) in console is still playable though but it only has 1/20 portion of the mobile version contents, basically it's just prelude to the mobile version.

I don't blame them though.
Running a game server is costly so they got to find a way to make money to maintain it.
Now it's up to players to decide whether their cash grabbing method is tolerable or not.

Do these games really need servers though? PSO2 maybe best online, but can still be playable as a single-player online game.

I understand, but despite my reasons for abandoning World of Warcraft, all it asked of me was a monthly subscription and nothing else. It didn't try to sell me level boosts, powerful weapons or pay-to-win features.

(Though I did quit WoW eventually because I wasn't satisfied with the gameplay.)

Yes, the data is too big to save in a console/PC so they are mostly saved in the server.
The server only transmits just some enough data (not all data) to its connected players.
If they're gonna make an offline version they had to resize/optimize the data first (which's not easy) so usually it became a downgrade.

I understand but that's the environment of PC game players.
Mobile game players aren't like that.
Most of them just want to spend none at all (there are too many "FREE" games in the Appstore afterall) while few whales keep pouring money to the publishers to keep the game alive.

Damn! It's like they got through the forest of progression, but unsure how to turn back.

No one wants to spend money, regardless what kind of gamer they are. But if it's "free", there's always likely a catch.

Of course there is a catch, but to what extend.
For example Last Cloudia, which somehow I still have been playing it until today since Sonic event started last year.
If you just want to play the game and enjoy the story you totally could play it for FREE.
The game basically could be played to the end without spending any money.
But if you want to get competitive fighting against other players that would need meta characters which will take you to the gacha system, that's where money involved. Of course we could still not spend any money, but that would take a lot of time for grinding the in-game currency to spin the gacha. Money vs Time (or sometimes just being lucky in gacha) in competitive mode.
Most of mobile games are usually like this. When we played single player mode against computer, mostly we don't have to pay anything.
