Of course there is a catch, but to what extend.
For example Last Cloudia, which somehow I still have been playing it until today since Sonic event started last year.
If you just want to play the game and enjoy the story you totally could play it for FREE.
The game basically could be played to the end without spending any money.
But if you want to get competitive fighting against other players that would need meta characters which will take you to the gacha system, that's where money involved. Of course we could still not spend any money, but that would take a lot of time for grinding the in-game currency to spin the gacha. Money vs Time (or sometimes just being lucky in gacha) in competitive mode.
Most of mobile games are usually like this. When we played single player mode against computer, mostly we don't have to pay anything.

That kind of free, I don't mind. PSO2 has something similar, where you don't need to buy anything to complete the story mode or provided missions. Usually players spend money for the sake of fashion than power.

SEGA's biggest mobile game earner, Project Sekai Colourful Stage! feat. Hatsune Miku, also like that, most purchase was more fashion.
They don't even add any new characters, all characters are the same since the beginning of the game.

So doesn't that mean SEGA is generally still good in term of F2P?

To give credit where credit is due, they don't rely on pay-to-win tactics. But as for "time-or-money" tactics, Sonic Speed Simulator is guilty of that. You either spend hours doing chores over buying characters and what-not because Gamefam can boast to Sega how popular their game is from all the time soaked into it, regardless if the time was spent having fun or not. I've never played any other Sonic freemium mobile game, so I dunno if those games are guilty of that either.

Since Gamefam's a different company, I guess they had a different strategy compared to SEGA.
I can't find details on Sonic Speedsim's revenues so I can't compare it to Forces or Rumble whether their strategy was better or not.

Does Dash, Speed Battle or Rumble make you work for the events over buying them with boring tasks?

Speed Battle make us completing Bonus Missions and Dash make us collecting cards on track to get the new characters.
That's considered boring or not, I don't know.

I guess I wouldn't know. Some of Speed Simulator was repetitive in a mind-numbing boring way. Such as destroying badniks which don't move or put up much of a fight, but what's worse is when they have a lot of hit points that you're chopping away at them like trees with an axe.

Or earning a bunch of gold medals where you do the same racecourse over and over.

Okay, the first one does sound boring.
But the second one where we have to race in the same racecourse over and over sounds no different with one in Dash.

Isn't Sonic Dash courses randomly generated, though? Sonic Speed Sim time trials are just the same routes over and over.

If they were to re-use the racecourses as time trial/obbies, I'd be more forgiving.
