Kao The Kangaroo Artist Talks Redesigning A Mascot For The Modern Age

Quote
Kao has grown up. Almost. He is older now, for sure, but not much; just more stubborn, mouthy, and youthfully brave.
He was never a superhero, but rather an adventurous kid with pure motivations, and we wanted to keep it this way.

He says it's a amscot for the modern age, but still looks like a '90s Playstation character to me.

Despite his "Playstation" looks, his first game was for Dreamcast, PC, and GBA.
Dreamcast version of the game is what made him popular back then.

What do you mean he was old?
He's as young as Ulala, Beat, Ryo Hazuki, and other Dreamcast icons that's released .... 23 years ago.
Dang, that was really a long long time ago, wasn't it...

I just didn't had that game for the Dreamcast. I knew of Spyro, Crash Bandicoot, heck even Ty the Tazmanian Tiger. Just never heard of this kangaroo. To me he seems like he was inspired by Crash and Ty.

I never played their games back then when SEGA's still console business,
they were never in SEGA consoles or arcade.
But I did recognize them from game magazines.
Especially from ads of them trying to be edgy or cool.

Eventhough he made fun of Sonic, I admit kinda chuckled when I saw the ad.
This is from era when the other Tasmanian character was also popular at that time.

That's true. And givne Ty mostly fell into obscurity after, Sonic, Crash and Spyro probably returned those dislodged boomerangs back to him.

R.I.P. Hidekazu Yukawa

Quote
Hidekazu Yukawa passed last June of pneumonia but his family kept the news private.
It is said he was sick for the past 5 years and was relaxing at home.

Still at least Ty's making a comeback, unlike Gex, Awesome Possums, or Jersey Devil.

Quote
We hear and see you
We moved mountains to make Kao The Kangaroo’s release on all major platforms globally on day one not just a possibility, but a reality.
As a small team, we faced a number of moving parts when it came to creating and releasing the game.
We’re aware of the bug affecting people’s saves and are hard at work patching this problem.
We aim to have the patch out this week.
We will be releasing further patches to address other issues, we’ll keep you updated.
