Yuzo Koshiro's Failed Streets Of Rage 4 (Dreamcast) Pitch Was Inspired By Team Fortress Classic

Quote
While we've had a fourth Streets of Rage game (and there's another on the way, too), it's fairly well known that, back in the Dreamcast era, Yuzo Koshiro and his Ancient studio pitched to create Streets of Rage 4 using 3D visuals.
While the resultant test footage includes the typical side-scrolling beat 'em up action the franchise is famous for, it also mixes in first-person combat – something Koshiro has revealed was due to his love of Team Fortress Classic.
"For those who may not know, decades ago we made a presentation movie with 和田 誠 to pitch a Dreamcast Streets of Rage 4," he says on social media. "It ended up looking very FPS-style, a clear sign of how much Team Fortress Classic, part of the FPS lineage that began with DOOM, influenced us back then."
When asked what Sega's reaction was, Koshiro replies ...

What's the other game on the list?
*Games I have played in the past, but want to play again.
**Waiting for finished development before playing.

I might add the New Virtual Fighter Project to the list, given it triggers memories of playing VF for the first time for me, but I'd rather see it more fleshed out before I decide on giving it a go.

For me, I don't think I want to touch Sonic Forces again, even if it's improved by fans, be it Re-Imaged or Overclocked.
But it's nice for fans who still want to see it reachs its full potential.
I haven't tried Illbleed, may be I'll give it go sometimes.

Any on your Sega Bucket List?

I've played most games that I wanna play on SEGA consoles so right now my bucket list are homebrew games (new games but made for SEGA consoles) like Earthion (SEGA Mega Drive), Frontier Force (SEGA Master System), or Gladmort (Dreamcast)

“Interrupting gameplay for visual flair is unacceptable in a fighting game.”
New VIRTUA FIGTHER Project producer talks about the title’s pursuit of “reality, not realism”

Quote
—When taking on the project, what did you identify as the “core” of the Virtua Fighter franchise that absolutely needed to be preserved in the new installment?

Yamada:
If I had to put it into words, it would be “reality.” I think most people would struggle to give a simple answer when asked to define what makes Virtua Fighter good. With 2D fighting games like Capcom’s Street Fighter series, it’s easier to grasp their defining characteristics, and I get the impression that their core features have remained largely consistent throughout new entries – they’ve evolved while cherishing their foundations.
But the essence of Virtua Fighter is harder to sum up in one sentence. That means there are many different aspects we must preserve in order to clearly define what kind of game it is. If I had to describe all those elements in one word, it would be “reality.” Not “realism,” but reality.
New Virtua Fighter
If we were to simply incorporate the realistic movements of actual martial arts, we’d just end up making “a game about that martial art.” For us, the priority is to make something fun, something that feels good, and then, on top of that, we want it to feel real.

—So it’s a matter of balancing game-like qualities with real-world believability?

Yamada:
Exactly. I believe “reality” lies in balancing events that don’t normally happen with those that feel like they could happen precisely because humans are involved. Drawing that line and translating it into the game is challenging, but it’s a core element of Virtua Fighter.
Also, Virtua Fighter has always been an innovator, a title that has been at the forefront of new things. Because of that, it doesn’t resemble much else; which allows it to occupy a truly unique position. I think that sense of uniqueness is also ...

That's fair. They look like good choices.

That's fair. They look like good choices.

The things of "classic" gameplay like these are there are no in-depth stories or exploration mode so I could play it less than one hour when I want to.
Most of new games are too time-consuming.

Clair Expedition 33 for example ...after SPOILER we found out the final boss is not a real final boss and the game turned out has just started. SPOILER ENDED.
Sure, the story and exploration aspects are good, could make us teary and touched, but I can find those too in other mediums (books, movies).

Even when playing Shinobi I kinda thought "Aren't these stages are too long?" and "When do I get to unlovk the arcade mode sothat I don't have to collect these things".
Exploration and stories in video games... things that I used to love when I was younger but now I just want something to go straight to just play them for a moment and then back to the prime life activities.
