Yes, but not because of a friendship with Messi. It's bigger than that. Argentina's national football team during the World Cup was already heavily criticized due to a mix of perceived arrogance, historical controversies, fan behavior (some supporters were caught on viral streams making monkey gestures and telling Black influencers to "cry at the zoo" during matches against Cape Verde and Egypt), and a suspect of favoritism from FIFA and match officials. Messi’s massive global fanbase from around the world actually was trying so hard to counterbalance this negative sentiment but it's kinda hard to escape from the team's polarizing reputation.

The favouritism thing is still a suspect though, nobody can prove anything so far, but FIFA has a long history heavily documented with systemic corruption, bribery scandals, and political interference a decade ago. They're better now ... or just may be more clever at hiding the things.

This swings me back round to the discussion we have going on on the Mobile Games thread about Virtua Striker. If people believe, or more aware of the corruption of FIFA and do not want to support it any more while still keeping the love of Football, Sega could continue the Virtua Striker series.

I know we're technically derailing two threads over FIFA Football. I don't recall if you made or there were a sports/football thread to continue this conversation on.

Yeah, though since last year, Mobile Version of Football Manager was locked behind Netflix Games subscription which angered some fans. I don't know why SEGA decided to do that or how Netflix could convince SEGA to agree to limit one of its most popular mobile games to their subscribers only.
