Clowns are often creepy or scary. The heavy makeup masks their true facial expressions, preventing people from reading intentions, which creates unease and distrust.

I once watched a YouTube video that proposed that the Nephilim from Biblical times resembled giant clowns. And that is why the fear of clowns exist to this day.

If painted face's categoried as a clown then sure Nephilim could be in.
But clowns are usually only scary when they are near.
When they are far away, for example like in a center of a circus show, they're usually perceived as funny entertainers.

They're annoying because they're usually doing pranks.
Just like some youtubers love to do.
But still most of the pranks are usually staged.

I wouldn't say what they're doing is really called pranks. I mean sure the "bucket of water over a door" is regarded a prank, but clown pranks are just towards one another which usually look like really predictable slapstick, or to victims it's usually squirty-flower or joybuzzer.

Predictable slapsticks for us adults, but for kids those kind of jokes are usually their first time watching.
That's why the ones who love clowns usually are kids.
They might be shown up as antagonists in adult games but they're protagonists in kid's games.

I suppose kids who cry over clowns aren't because they're scared of them, but because they have better taste in humour.
