SEGA Talk #178: US Box Art Design (1989-2001)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9b8-5qwZYQA

Quote
In this episode of Sega Talk, we track the radical evolution of SEGA’s North American branding, from the clinical “graph paper” grids of the Master System to the high-tech “black box” era of the Genesis. We dive deep into why Sega abandoned its uniform look for the iconic red-stripe rebrand of the 90s, the switch to the massive plastic long-boxes of the Saturn, and finally, the Dreamcast’s sleek transition from bright orange swirls to the edgy “SegaNet” black. It’s a nostalgic look at how Sega used graphic design as a weapon in the console wars, shifting from a toy company aesthetic to a lifestyle brand that defined a generation.

Yes, I took a whack at PSOep3 and while I've mostly been testing than actually playing, I'm surprised ARKS (or "ARKZ") were the bad guys of the story. Though with how it's written, it seems like the Hunters represent Pioneer 2's potentially corrupt government while ARKZ are more of revolutionists than terrorist... which to any opposed government those words mean same thing I suppose.

(I made up a FOnewm named "Solitaire", I've yet to pick a side for him. I hope fashion is still a thing in PSO given I don't like his default jester costume.)

Isn't CrossWorld still doing really well? Better than MKWorld?

It's doing well, but not better than MKWorld. Far from that.
CrossWorlds finally reaching 1 million (thanks to holiday sale) while MKWorld already reached 14 million.
Even in your country, MKWorld is always on Top 3 on the UK best selling games while CrossWorlds has already disappeared after Holiday Sale's over.

Dammit Mario! I bet it's because of the Switch 2's jacked up prices that's making the millions.

Milion as number of the game units sold, not as Dollar/Pound Sterling so it has nothing to do with the price.
At first I thought because the game's bundled with Switch 2 in some countries (just like Sonic 1 with Mega Drive back then), but turned out half of them are comes from eShop sales which is still a lot of numbers.
Remember that the prequel, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe for the Nintendo Switch, has sold more than 70 million unit while SEGA only targeted CrossWorlds to sell 2 millions but it's still failed to meet goal right now.
Hopefully Switch 2 physical version of CrossWorlds that will release in March 2026 could boost the sales to meet the goal.

Well, I only heard gamers, even fans of Mario, complain about MKWorld, and only heard praise for TSCrossworld. So I dunno why TSCross is still struggling while Mario still prints money.

They complain because content-wise Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is still better than MKWorld while fans expected that a sequel should be better than its prequel.
But that doesn't make MKWorld is bad game. As a multiplayer games, it's still a very good game. Gameplay-wise it's still as fun and graphic-wise it's better than 8 Deluxe.

It is. May be later it could meet up the expectation after the game's got holiday sale again where all characters are already available.
Some Sonic fans still considered Sonic Racing: Crossworlds the most expensive game in the Sonic franchise so they wait for a sale.
And they're not wrong since the game's having a high $70 standard price and a $90 deluxe edition when it's launched.
Compared that to Sonic Forces & Lost World ($40) or Sonic Frontiers or Unleashed ($60).
