I just found out about an arcade game called Outtrigger.

Just as surprised it had a Dreamcast release.

I'm curious why it never caught on. I mean, imagine if this game was release, or the very least re-release before or during the height of Team Fortress 2 fame! Hell, Sega Retro says this is the first "Hero Shooter" ever!

It's like at times, Sega were the trendsetters but rarely the trend.

Really? I thought this one was well known and praised a lot during its release.
The arcade version at least, we got them here in some arcade center.
Dreamcast version I admit wasn't popular here but it was released too late (two years after arcade version) so the hype's already went down, plus people has been moving to PS2.

I've never heard of it until now. It had me a bit surprised given while VALVe were not the first to make hero shooter... well, Team Fortress 2 technically isn't a "hero" shooter, but the mercenaries are that iconic. That and Overwatch was obviously inspired by Team Fortress 2 which started a trend of Hero Shooters. Just saying 2007-2023 was an era for Hero Shooters, such as Apex Legends and Valorant.

And I just this second remembered... Sega did "attempted" to make a Hero Shooter called Hyenas. But they cancelled it due to lack of direction and poor management.

I'm just saying, imagine if Sega, or the very least Ys Net if the rights are still owned by Yu Suzuki, if they made an "Outtrigger 2"? Like Counter Strike, the theme could be counter-terrorism, but with more themed characters. Similar to G.I. Joe.

Sega attempted to get into the Hero Shooter with Hyena, when they already had Outtrigger.

It's because SEGA never considered Outrigger as a success.
Dreamcast version's selling relatively very very low numbers afterall (roughly 40,000 units combined in Japan/US) during the Dreamcast's final days.
That's why I doubt their higher-ups would give a greenlit for any sequel plan if there's any so they make a new one instead.
