It is. But the very monetization and backing has made me miss more classic-era YouTube before algorithms and "remember to hit that like button and subscribe!" clout.

It was a good movie. Better than I remembered it.
A part I found somewhat sweet and sincere was when Sanzang cried over the death of the little girl who he laments was 4-5. Usually protagonists do feel guilt over the deaths they could've prevented, but it looked sincere to see the hero needed to be comforted over it like that. (Though he pushed it for comedy a bit at the end.)

Will watch the sequel if I can find it.

Sanzang is definitely kinder than his master.
Have a better morale too I guess since his master doesn't have problems with stealing food from the market.

Yes, but all the actors who played the main characters are different in the sequel so it'll need some minutes to familiarize ourselves with them.

Yeah, I noticed the change in actors. I can understand if Monkey, Pigsy and Sandy could "shapeshift" to a degree to adapt, though why Sandy's "human" form looks scary while in the prequel he looked like a handsome man, I don't know. He looked like a cross between Gill-man and Lurch.

I'm guessing there was never a third instalment.

I don't know why the franchise stalled after the second film eventhough they're sucessful when most franchises love to form a trilogy.

Perhaps money, or budget issues? Or promoting or the right studio? I dunno. I don't know why the original actors couldn't reprise their roles.

It said that Stephen Chow's attention has been focused into "The New King of Comedy"movie (I haven't watched it yet so I don't know whether it's good or not but it won 2 awards) so he didn't have time to properly set up the sequel.

Sonic 4's Reported Amy Rose Origin Change Frustrates Silver the Hedgehog Fans

In a new report from insider Daniel Richtman, the known scooper shared what he's heard about Sonic 4's upcoming plot and how Amy Rose will fit into it. Ritchman posited that "Amy comes from an alternate future / another Earth where Robotnik and Metal Sonic rule the world," and she travels to the time of the Sonic movies to "prevent it."
This quickly furrowed some brows among the Sonic fandom, as it is a vastly different origin story for Amy Rose, and, in fact, encroaches on the potential appearance of another beloved character from the franchise.
This 'save the future by changing the past' origin story sounds awfully similar to another character in SEGA's blue-quilled video game canon, Silver the Hedgehog. First introduced in 2006's oft-maligned Sonic the Hedgehog (colloquially known as Sonic 06), Silver was a teleporting white-haired Hedgehog sent back in time from a peaceful future to thwart the plans of one Doctor Robotnik to maintain the security of his timeline.
Some believe that Amy Rose debuting with a similar backstory could put the odds of Silver showing up down the line in Paramount's Sonic franchise in jeopardy.
In response to Richtman's Amy Rose report, one X user wrote, "Stole Silver's whole flow," while another posited, "copying one character's whole thing and sh***ly pasting it onto another character is such a lame way to explore ...

While I do like the Terminator vibe from it... I hope they're not going to do what Archie Sonic comic did and replace one Robotnik for another.

Then they could do it with Silver instead of putting Amy Rose with Silver's backstory, though I understand why they picked Amy since they wanted to add a romcom in Sonic 4.
