She said in her opinion that while Sega makes good niche games, that's all they're doing now. They're not making the game where the character is memorable anymore. At least to the masses.

Actually it's more that NO ONE is making memorable characters anymore.  Everyone is either hyper realistic, and/or a space marine.

I disagree, just a handful from this generation:
*Dead Rising had Frank West (He's covered Wars you know?)
*MadWorld had Jack Carver, Black Baron (Stop Starin')
*Bayonetta
*Mass Effect has Tali, Garrus, Wrex, and... pretty much most of the crew
*No More Heroes had all the bosses and Travis Touchdown

And as much as you might not like them, even ultra realistic characters can be great and memorable (Sam Fisher for example is a great character, Ditto John Marsdon from Red Dead Redemption.), as can space marines. What's wrong with Master Chief? I think he's a great character, instantly recognisable and iconic.

Aaaanyway, as for Sega... I gotta go with Kazuma Kiryu. The fact that the games are brilliant help a lot, but he's a cool character. Not to mention he has the best nomme de guerre I've heard in a while 'The Dragon of Dojima'.

I have seen a lot of fans of Valkyria Chronicles characters like Selvaria, Alicia and such.

Kazuma Kiryu of course and Majima (Yakuza)

Bayonetta might not be 1st party but is owned by Sega and she stands out a lot amongst the crowd.

I personally found OTRA to be a great character.

Yeah, I would've said Ulala is one of my favorites as well, but she came out in 2000.

This list of "great characters" made me really depressed.  I am not drawn to a single one of these guys.

You could have at least mentioned professor layton.

Opinions. I found the list to be great, not sure why you don't like them. I agree on Professor Layton though, he's excellent too.

It's not that I find them abhorrent.  I just doubt that any of them will still be around in ten years, much less remembered.  Save for master chief of course.  But not due to any sort of charisma; his presence is lasting due to fiscal reasons alone.

They're just all so generically gritty.  Of course, this is just one dude's opinion.

I don't really see how they are all 'gritty'. Frank West for example is pretty goofy, especially in his TVC incarnation. Not to mention that just because someone is meant to be tough/realistic doesn't mean they are a bad character. Sam Fisher is a good example of a realistic character who still has plenty of charisma and style thanks to his dark and dry sense of humour and iconic look (The night vision goggles especially). Not to mention he has already been around for eight years, which kinda puts your 'don't see them being around in ten years' argument into perspective.

And if you are going to call all those characters 'generically gritty' you may as well say Professor Layton, Sonic, Mario, and every other character that is even remotely cartoony are 'Generically cartoony'.

tl;dr, I think you are being too harsh, or maybe haven't really had that much experience with these characters if you think none of them are good. But again, it's all opinions.

He's still just another unattractive brown haired thirty-something white guy that gramers seem to be enamored with.

See what I mean? Even when Frank West is like "Hey, look at me! Aren't my shenanigans just wacky?!", he still looks like a boring character.

Talking about Frank West i have to disagree with you, is not just about the look. The fact he's not perfect, goofy and with a bad sense of humor make him perfect for that kind of game. You can just laugh looking at him run or jump so slow and that is basically the purpose of the game. So, perfect character for me.
