Who's been the best Sega character since 2001-onwards?
« on: September 30, 2010, 07:45:09 am »
Me and a couple of collegues were discussing video game characters the other day when it quickly turned into a discussion about Sega and their characters because they were talking about SASASR.

One of them mentioned that Bayonetta would be one of the best because the game made sure that you at least enjoyed the character of bayonetta even if you didn't like the storyline.
I pointed out to her that bayonetta was just a Sega second party game and can she mention one from them themselves.

She said in her opinion that while Sega makes good niche games, that's all they're doing now. They're not making the game where the character is memorable anymore. At least to the masses.

I had a long thought about that. So I decided to come here and see what anyone's fave character is from Sega's third party era.

Pretty much half the cast from the Yakuza series!

Okay, but they all do have good characterization, so I'll just go with the main one, Kazuma Kiryu. Though if I could pick two, Majima would be up there too, Akiyama was a great addition to the cast in Yakuza 4 too.

I suppose AiAi is another good character I think for a family game, fairly recognizable too.

I happen to like Eileen a lot and was my favourite fighter in Virtua Fighter 5, but that's a series that started off as a first party effort. Bayonetta was a great character too, fairly different from the majority of females in games too.

Internally developed:

First choice: Kazuma Kiryu - I've only played the first game, but he has been a standout character from the third party era. I don't think we can count characters that appeared in sequels in 2001 onwards (such as Ryo Hazuki) however...

Second choice: Beat (JSRF) - While a sequel, Beat is a total redesign of the character and is definitely a different beast. I like a majoirty of the JSRF characters, but Beat really stands out. Gum, Corn and Yo-yo are also good ones. I've always thought Beat should have been the new SEGA mascot. He's just so much cooler than Sonic.

Externally developed: Bayonetta - She's just plain awesome. The pre-2001 days had Toe Jam & Earl and Ecco. Post-2001 has Bayonetta.

Chip

Firklin

Kazuma Kiryu (new version is better than Keanu Reeves version!)

Those are the three that immediately come to mind. ^^;;; I'll post more later when I think of them.

I'll answer you so you can see where I'm coming from: You're obviously not taking the topic seriously, you're simply using it as yet another excuse to flaunt flamebait like Chip and Firklin. Frankly it's becoming pathetic on your part and I'm sick of entering a topic only to see you plastering nonsense like that on my screen. Hence: ignore list. Now if other users have a problem with Fluffy's posts, feel free to IM me.

Wasn't the point of this topic to post who you think the best SEGA characters since 2001 are? @_@ Well, those are two of my favorites.

Lol at your choices fluffymoo, chip is the worst character EVER!!!

Nah, just kiddin.(nah he actually really is)

I like that opa-opa and Alexkid finally made come backs after a long time in SASASR.

They could have made Alex look a little bit better though.

But my my post 2001 favourites are.. Kiryu Kazuma, no doubt. I guess he's just the sort of character a lot of people would look up to. His  character is interesting and I can kind of relate to the way he's always so calm in most of the situations. I Like both of the portraits(ps2 and ps3HD)

And I guess Vashyron from Resonance of Fate. I really enjoyed the game and even though the thin story, Vashyrons character and sense of humor was a nice touch.

I'd pick Vyse from Skies of Arcadia instead if it were post 2000. This will do as a post 2001.

Actually it's more that NO ONE is making memorable characters anymore.  Everyone is either hyper realistic, and/or a space marine.

It's hard for me to pick an absolute favorite, but I really liked Selvaria from Valkyria Chronicles.

That's somewhat true.

I tried to think of characters from other post-2001 SEGA games, but I ended up drawing a lot of blanks. I wouldn't have had this problem in the 90's...

Kazuma

And now, for something completely different:

I think Luka is cool/funny enough for his own game honestly.

Enzo definitely needed more screen time. Bayonetta 2 needs an Enzo mini-game!*
