Sonic is going to space!

Quote
In a project with 5 space organizations that include JAXA and NASA, Sonic will join a special mission to Phobos, one of Mars' moons, launching on 10/20! If successful, the spacecraft will send a test image of the Blue Blur back to Earth...a world's first!

In celebration of this interstellar feat, Yui Karasuno from the Sonic Team created a special piece of artwork for fans to join Sonic on his journey.

The Blue Wayfinder collection is now available on Amazon Shop.

It's not all that bad. There are always advantages and disadvantages for every strategy.
Did you ever buy the game just because they're on sale?
You did not really want to play it but you gave it a go since the price is cheap and turn out you love it?
And then you're curious to the whole franchise and buy other games too?
Many new SEGA fans were born like this, especially Yakuza and Persona.
Having sale was like a marketing for game franchises too.
I see, but why Sega complain over not making enough profit from these games? Maybe it's just me, but wouldn't it cause fans to worry about the game or franchise?

For example, if Sonic Racing: Crossworld sold more copies than Mario Kart World (digital and/or physical), But Sega complains Crossworld did not meet expectations in profits because the majority of customers purchased the game during sales, doesn't it make fans worry for the well-being of the game?

And the fact that it's confirmed Sega did once consider putting Sonic on the chopping block, their own mascot, goes to show Sonic is not as mighty as Super Mario. That Sega does not have the same confidence with Sonic as Nintendo does with Mario.
I'm talking about SEGA HARDlight, who's in charge in Sonic Forces, both mobile and this Nex version.
Sonic Rumble was developed by three studios : Sonic Team, Sega 4th Development Division, and Rovio Entertainment, just to give context how hard it is having both mobile and PC version's running together with those continuous updates.
But SEGA HARDlight are still a division under Sega. Sega could still port the game to PC if they wanted to.
This GTA 5 and Sonic The Hedgehog 'crossover merger' is an affront to gaming I'll never recover from

I had no interest in GTAV, until today with this mod.

Also, the other videos on this channel are spectacular! This guy should have more views.

I'm reminded of the werehog shirt from Sonic Generations Speed Highway. One of the mannequins in the mall-area of Speed Highway is wearing a T-shirt that is based on an actual T-shirt.

Actually SEGA is not 'complaining'. They're reporting the progress to the shareholders.
They just report the results as what they were.
Social media and gamesites are the one who blowed them up (the report was available publicy in SEGA website afterall) to gain clicks and views.
Aren't we supposed to be happy that at least SEGA told the shareholder the truth as they were?

And the fact that it's confirmed Sega did once consider putting Sonic on the chopping block, their own mascot, goes to show Sonic is not as mighty as Super Mario. That Sega does not have the same confidence with Sonic as Nintendo does with Mario.

This happened more than a decade ago where Sonic was in decline, and also it's not as if it was already decided.
It's just one on the board metting one of higher-ups saw the low of sales and rating of Sonic Boom series (plus Lost World and Sochi Olympic) and asked Sonic Team why were they still continuing Sonic if the result were like those.
Wasn't it best to put him to rest and use their resources to other franchise that's succesful?
In which Takashi Iizuka replied they're still confident of Sonic success with their 25th anniversary and movie plan.
Now, Frontiers is a succes and Sonic merchs are selling like crazy, licensing request keep coming, meaning there's no way higher ups want to put him down again.
It's all in the past, better to focus on Sonic's future now.

But SEGA HARDlight are still a division under Sega. Sega could still port the game to PC if they wanted to.

SEGA HARDlight have no resource and time for that. Even the team behind the most popular and profitable mobile game, Project Sekai: Colorful Stage feat Hatsune Miku, rejected SEGA when SEGA wanted to make a PC version of it since there is a lot of request from fans wanting that. Same reason with SEGA HARDlight's.
Remember, Sonic Rumble needs three teams just to keep the game updated and synchronized. It just need one team if Rumble's just for mobile. And the result of the three team combined still couldn't beat those mobile game that's released only for Japan (SEGA Mahjong Net, Yakuza Online, or Puyo Puyo Quest) let alone beating the mighty juggernaut Colorful Stage and Persona 5: Phantom X.

It's really cool but this isn't just a normal mod. This is a game merger.
AI (Claude) now can merger two games into one.
I've seen people merged Doom with Minecraft or Zelda with Mario too.
Legally it's more risky to be taken down than just mods but they'll keep coming. AI is unstopable.

I'm reminded of the werehog shirt from Sonic Generations Speed Highway. One of the mannequins in the mall-area of Speed Highway is wearing a T-shirt that is based on an actual T-shirt.

If it's being made into t-shirt than it's a popular thing. Werehog canonically popular in Sonic's universe.

True, but Sega could assure it's communities that everything is alright.

I know, it's just if Mario was in this situation, no one would dare suggest ending Mario over it, instead it would be suggested how to improve his image, given Mario represented Nintendo.
SEGA HARDlight have no resource and time for that. I see. So it is definitely wanted by more than just... me, but iw ould just be too much hassle and inconvenience on both HARDlight and Sega's part.

...
Do you think they could recreate games for modern computers?

For example, give an AI (maybe Claud) the ROM to uh... Tails' Adventure, or Sonic Blast for the Game Gear, and instruct it to recreate the game, but functional for modern computers and screen ratio. Could it do that?

True, but Sega could assure it's communities that everything is alright.

Explaining thing that we didn't do is just adding fuel to the fire. Better let it be.

I see. So it is definitely wanted by more than just... me, but iw ould just be too much hassle and inconvenience on both HARDlight and Sega's part.

That's the thing ... if we're not sure that the result will be good, better not doing it at all.
And SEGA has f**king learned this the hard way ... this year.
May be you haven't catched up yet but I'm gonna tell you SEGA's blunder of the year.

You know SEGA and Creative Assembly had a new Total War game coming next year, right?
This one ...

So in order to hype fans into Total War franchise, they decide to remake one of their best Total War games: Total War: SHOGUN 2.

The thing is who's gonna make it? Not much time left after Total War: Warhammer 40,000 announcement, only a year.
Creative Assembly's already busy with the Total War: Warhammer 40,000 and Alien: Isolation 2.
So it has to be done by other companies like Feral Interactive but they're gonna refuse of course because of the deadline, they need at least three years to make the remake.
Here comes MATABOO, a company who's done remastered for S.T.A.L.K.E.R trilogy, Gotham Knights, and the Sinking City, who's confident they could do it in a year.
Problem solved, right? Well, they wish.

When the game was finally released, fans were furious.
Turned out the reason why MATABOO could release the remake so fast was because they're using AI and we can recognize them immediatelly.
Players pointed out obvious generative AI artifacts, including a Portuguese soldier in the overview trailer and character artwork depicting individuals with more than five fingers (such as six-fingered hands or extra thumbs) and distorted features where a samurai’s face awkwardly merged with his helmet.
As if they are not enough to make fans mad, there were also Sloppy AI Unit Card Upscaling. The hand-drawn woodblock-style unit cards and portraits from the original 2011 game were run through an automated AI upscaling/generative tool to stretch them to 4K resolution. The process smeared fine details, warped brushstrokes, and created "vibe-coded slop" that looked lifeless and lazy compared to the original human art.

Following an overwhelmingly negative player reception (dropping below 20% positive reviews on Steam) and widespread criticism of the AI artifacts, SEGA and Creative Assembly temporarily pulled the Complete Edition from Steam and restored access to the original 2011 version while they investigate the work done by their development partner.

Steam guidelines require developers and publishers to explicitly declare whether generative AI was used in creating game content.
Crazy Taxi: World Tour declared that eventhough the use of it is very minimal (just for ideation and refference) and no AI-generated content or assets will appear in the final game. That alone already made fans mad.
And now here comes the Shogun 2 Complete Edition, which lacked any generative AI disclosure store page, violating expectations. Fans were not just mad anymore, they feel betrayed.

Oh wow! I mean, I don't really want to buy GTAV just for the one mod, but the fact AI can merge games, that be something.
...

Yes, they could, but you got to recompile the game first and made an executable file using the recompiled version of the game.
Recently we had recompiled version of Unleashed and Sonic Free Riders : https://github.com/YuutaTsubasa/Free-Riders-Recompiled

And not just Sonic, several Mario games have active static recompilation and source-level port projects that allow them to run natively on PC and other modern platforms without traditional emulation:

• Super Mario World (SuperMarioWorldRecomp):https://github.com/mstan/SuperMarioWorldRecomp
• Mario Kart 64 (SpaghettiKart / MarioKart64Recomp): https://github.com/sonicdcer/MarioKart64Recomp
• Paper Mario (Paper-Mario-ReCut): https://github.com/SMCGames/Paper-Mario-ReCut

And there are also for new ones like Super Mario Wonder Recomp but I'm not gonna put the link since the game is still new.

The point is yes, recompiling games can be done quickly now ith Claude and modern AI-driven reverse engineering.
This came with a price though, something called "Indie Developer Anxiety'.
Small and independent developers now worry that sharing public demos, early access builds, or work-in-progress footage exposes their code to rapid cloning and reverse-engineering by bad actors due how easy it is now to be done with AI.

Sonic the Werehog tends to be popular around Halloween.

Glad to see the werehog got some love from fans. Some might hate his gameplay, but still love the character or design.

Well, it got me thinking.
Remember on the Golden Axe thread, I talked about that if Sega were to release "Origins" game for Golden Axe and Shinobi prior to Shinobi:AoV and the upcoming Golden Axe game, it would help the audience, both old and new, to re-familiarise themselves with the franchise. But as you said remastering each game would take years.
But, couldn't Claude remaster those games for them? It's not like it would be using AI to make something new and cheap, just to recreate the games as accurately to the original coding as possible, but for modern platforms and screen resolutions.

But, I didn't know about the SHOGUN 2 debacle and I imagine Sega would be super-hesitant using AI for convenience for now on.

Which is a pity because, while I am against "AI slop" and I am against the use of AI for cheap content, I'm not against the use of AI as a creative tool or, in this case, restoration. What MATABOO did was bad. They lied that they could do it and didn't bother to check over and fix errors left over from the AI, and because of this blunder, made Sega look bad and likely hesitant to use AI for now on, while other developers out there (Blizzard, Capcom, SquareEnix, 50% of the gaming industry) will use AI generative content as a creative tool and not get shit on like Sega did.
Glad to see the werehog got some love from fans. Some might hate his gameplay, but still love the character or design.
You'd think Sega would promote him more around October.

Great leaders take ownership of public responsibility when their team makes a mistake, seeing errors as a chance to fix systems rather than to punish individuals.
That's thankfully what SEGA do.

It's still SEGA's fault for not testing the game fully first before it launched.
Fans who bought it joked that they felt like they're the beta tester, but they got to pay instead of being rewarded.
Thankfully Total War community isn't toxic one like we know who.
Imagine if this is happened to remastered of Shinobi, Golden Axe, Altered Beast, or ... Sonic.
Gamesites and social media users would have blast to eat SEGA alive.

Well, it got me thinking.

No, using AI for programming's still counted as using AI.
And remember, people hates AI not because for protecting arts and intelectual property reason, but also because of enviroment reason.
AI consumes massive amounts of freshwater through data center cooling, electricity generation, and chip manufacturing, creating a growing resource conflict with local water supplies.
A single basic query to Claude uses between 25 and 70 milliliters of water. This means a simple question consumes roughly 1/20th to 1/7th of a bottle of water (roughly a shot glass worth)
AI's global freshwater footprint is projected to reach 4.2 to 6.6 billion cubic meters annually by 2027.
It's about saving the earth in the future.

But, I didn't know about the SHOGUN 2 debacle and I imagine Sega would be super-hesitant using AI for convenience for now on.

What I don't like is that this thing could make the higher ups SEGA have trust issue with third party game companies too and it will hurt reputation for those who's honest.
Did you know that some of Yakuza games on Steam were also ported by third party?

There were at least two of them that I know :

1. Lab42 Games. This UK-based studio was responsible for developing the original PC ports for Yakuza 0 and Yakuza Kiwami. Interestingly they received development assistance from SEGA Hardlight, to make sure that the port was as accurate as possible.

2. QLOC. The Polish co-development and remastering studio handled the PC conversion for Yakuza 6: The Song of Life, as well as porting work for The Yakuza Remastered Collection (Yakuza 3, 4, and 5).

And since they're given enough time to port them, all of their port were as good as the original on the Playstation.

But of course we don't know the full story. It could also be MATABOO gave up in the middle saying turned out we couldn't meet the deadline then asked to use AI and someone at SEGA or Creative Assembly decided to give the option a go as long as the game could be launched at the deadline.

You'd think Sega would promote him more around October.

SEGA HARDlight at least already promoted him non-stop.

While the community I am on isn't toxic, it has a stern anti-AI policy. If they released a Sonic game made with botched AI... oh heck!
No, using AI for programming's still counted as using AI.

It's about saving the earth in the future.
I don't mean to sound like an eco-villain but at this point... what's the point?

At some point during the 60s-70s humans became more conscious over pollution and the well-being of our environment. 80s-90s more social movement for anti-pollution and environmental awareness and protection, especially kids show presenting such important messages to us. 20'00s-10s while scientists regard some pollution of the past causing irreversible damage, it still acknowledge that the hole in ozone layer is shortening and world ecosystems have "healed" over the last few decades.

AI had pretty much undid all of these efforts in a decade. With data centres taking up land, taking up water and producing it's own variation of pollution all because AI is regarded both the next big thing and profitable for Big Tech.

But it's hard to down-right dismiss AI generative content when:
  • It can be used to advance science and medicine further than human capacity, allowing for life-saving cures.
  • Can be used as a creative tool, not as a replacement for creativity.
  • Even if you are staunch anti-AI, from packaging to digital services you use in your daily lives, likely use AI-generated content whenever you are aware of it or not.
All we can hope for, is if the AI Data Centres become more eco-acceptable, though Big Tech has yet to ask the AI how to do that while making money.

In a way, this is all but a small example of what's to come now that AI is capable of reverse engineering. I mean, there are services and security in our day to day lives that uses complexity as a security measure itself.

To sum up an example, imagine if someone taught Claude how to hack. Hack what exactly? "anything"! High-profile accounts, bank savings, government data, what would normally be too high risk or near-impossible for todays black-hat hackers to do, especially get away with, they could just train an AI to do it for them to be quicker and efficient than themselves.

If an AI can de-compile games and frankenstein them together at the whim of some 16 year old in the comfort of his bedroom... what else can AI access and de-compile?
SEGA HARDlight at least already promoted him non-stop.
True but, I dunno. Why not a sequel to Night of the Werehog? A "festival" or the very least a Sonic & Friends special.

While the community I am on isn't toxic, it has a stern anti-AI policy. If they released a Sonic game made with botched AI... oh heck!

Facebook thankfully has pre-approved function so we could always filter all rage bait posts.
Just posts though, not comments, unless the comments are from someone outside the group.

Because if everybody's thinking "what's the point" and gave up, then doom is certain.
Someone has to care enough so that big techs could find the eco-friendly solution, otherwise they wouldn't even think about it.

Yes, that's the concern right now, the unsettling implications of advanced AI capable of reverse engineering complex software.
Now people just use it for video games but later it might compromise critical infrastructure and global security systems.
The potential fragility of our digital world and the hidden risks beneath current technical progress is real.

The reason is money. Making animation is not cheap (unless we are using AI) and Night of the Werehog was made from a portion of the budget of Sonic Unleashed's marketing.
