Nintendo didn't have too since sales-wise Game Boy's already far winning, unlike Genesis vs SNES where the sales number competition is still fierce.

They actually had quite a few channels. Four channels as well as a news channel, parliament, children (CBBC) and preschool (Cbeebies).
I dunno if any other country has this, certainly not America, but here, the BBC enforce a television licence. It may sound like more nanny-state stuff, but as far as I'm aware it's always been like that since televisions were introduced to Britain.
My family used to have a television licence, but we cancelled it years a go. Especially given BBC are forward with all woke and political correction stuff. Practically ruined Doctor Who over it.
