Unfortunately not at that time, his popularity gap between Japan and western was really high.
But that's not just Sonic, Crash Bandicoot was failed to make impression too there.
Cute characters were more popular than edgy ones.
They prefer Toro and Kuro (who then became Sony's official mascot characters in Japan, while western sticked with Polygon Man and Crash) than Crash.

Thankfully that's in the past and now now Sonic's kinda popular there too.
Mario + Sonic Olympic series plus his awesome entrance trailer in Super Smash Bros. Brawl ironically were huge factors.
So Sonic's Japanese reputation is rebuilding?
Well. The point is Peacemaker TV Series Season 1 is both counted in DCEU and DCU, the difference is just the post ending.
Season 2 is belong to DCU though since DCEU was discontinued.
It#s still a bit confusing. I mean, I know crossovers between different franchises happen, but that means the DCEU and DCU overlap... somehow.
Yeah, but not so far with Peacemaker and Superman (2025) timeline.
I hope it all makes sense eventually.

Yeah. And Japan also has different taste .
For example in western Sonic Mania is well accepted, but in Japan the reaction's kinda mixed.
On the other hand in Japan Sonic Frontiers is well accepted, while in western the reaction's kinda mixed.
It's really hard to please both parties.

It's not overlapped, it's just two universes has a same story for certain characters, but most of the stories are different.

I Googled it, I think it was just a retcon.

During Mega Drive era yeah (though in popularity he's still behind Puyo Puyo and Shining Force. Weird, isn't it? But like I said Japan had different taste), then he went into oblivion when SEGA Saturn's released.

Well, at least Sonic is coming back in popularity in the Land of the Rising Sun.
So, was it belong to DCU or DCEU?
Formerly DCEU, now it's DCU. I guess James Gunn can just decide that.
