There was already one back then, Ninetndo vs SEGA SBB-like game, in MUGEN when MUGEN was still using DOS, used to play it.
I couldn't find it again though when MUGEN switched using Windows. It wasn't playable in Windows anyway.
There was a time I had rough ideas for my own platform fighting game in style of mash Bros, but with low-poly fields and 2D fighters. But I gave up on the idea given I didn't wanted to rip off Smash Bros at the time.
Now, I just wish for more Sonic characters in Smash Bros.
There were also area explorings too, but of course not as detailed as console games.
The fact it was a mobile game held it back.
For example, it's why I prefer Chain Chronicles' anime over the actual game itself. Chain Chronicles anime shows awesome fight scenes and the like, while the game itself just look like a tower defence RPG combat game.
Back when it's still 16-Bit era may be, but right now I doubt it.
Why not something based on the 16-bit era?
I came up with the concept of "Virtua City". I like to imagine Virtua City as a metropolis where various Sega characters can co-exist. If you are familiar with
CN City, kind of like that but with Sega characters instead of Cartoon Network characters.
It is Virtua City where Judgement Six reside and host the Virtua Fighter tournament. But Virtua City also has various sports stadiums that other Virtua game are based on. There is also a "Sega World" or Joypolis at the heart of Virtua City.
Throughout the city, there are also warp rings that allow Sega characters to come and go from the worlds of their video games.
I haven't decided if Virtua City is an actual place, somewhere probably in Japan or America, or, like the Nexus from Virtua Quest, Virtua City resides in a virtual reality and require Sega-licence
NerveGear-like device to access it. Or, like Digimon, can be accessed from reality to digital.
Two ideas I had around Virtua City:
- A story set in the mid-90s where a girl is on her way to Virtua City. She either won a Sega contest which rewarded her with a trip to Virtua City, or she is parttaking in a contest hosted in Virtua City. Her time there gets caught up with Judgement Six' evil scheme. Judgement Six consisting of various Sega villains.
- A reboot of Sega Hard Girls, about normal, regular girls who attend an All-Girls school in Virtua City. However, the group of friends gains the power to magically transform into their Sega Hard Girl counterparts as they solve problems around Virtua City.
