Castlevania: Symphony of the Night was a sleeper hit in North America when it landed on the Sony PlayStation way back in 1997. Beautifully drawn 2D sprites with dazzling 3D effects, and a brilliant score. There’s a very good reason why many fans consider it the very best of the franchise. As incredible as the game already is, Konami released an expanded version for the SEGA Saturn….only in Japan.
That’s right; it’s import month on My Life with SEGA. This week, I’m reviewing Dracula X: Nocturne in the Moonlight for SEGA Saturn. If you’re a fan of the American version, as well as the Saturn, you’re probably thinking, “Holy shit! The Saturn is one of the best 2D gaming machines ever created. This is gonna’ blow the PlayStation outta’ the water!”

Interesting… another Saturn game that should have been better than the PS version, but inexplicably suffered from similar framerate issues, is In the Hunt. Still, it’s quite playable on the Saturn, especially considering the much better controllers. Regarding the Castlevania series, they seem like the ideal type of platformer for me in many ways, with light RPG elements and branching pathways to explore, but I am not a big fan of the vampire aesthetic. But this looks so good I’ve got to try it. It’s too bad that this didn’t come out in the States… the US library really could have used the help.
I never played In the Hunt, but I remember seeing ads for it in magazines like EGM and Game Players. Looked decent.
The vampire elements are cliche, yes, but I think this installment in particular is a gorgeous representation of that world. The Saturn version is fairly import friendly. For a complete copy, this cost me $65. I feel it was worth it.
Hello! Very good review of a very good game. I played a lot in PSX version – all I can say, that this game rocks! Under my TV there aren’t lying any Saturn, but in next months I will buy it 🙂 Maybe I will try SS edition 🙂

However, the next episode won’t be Shenmue. The Shenmue review won’t be up until Feb 27th. There’s two more reviews before we can look back on….that day.
