Announced this past April at SEGA FES, the Mega Drive Mini (Genesis Mini) was on track for a late 2018 release. The plug and play was SEGA’s answer to the NES and SNES Classics from Nintendo. However, since the announcement the company AtGames let slip that they were making the console for SEGA. The reveal was largely met with negativity, due to AtGames past attempts at Mega Drive/Genesis plug and plays which typically had less than ideal audio and video.
It seems SEGA saw the backlash, as development of the software has shifted to in-house at SEGA of Japan. As such, the mini console is seeing a delay into 2019. This is great news, as SEGA has (once again) realized that it is better to not rush and cheapen out on a product that really deserves more time and attention.
My hope is that they consult with M2 and offer a lineup of games that blows the SEGA Genesis Classics collection out of the water. I’m talking FULL lineups of every major in-house franchise, and that includes adding the elusive Sonic 3 and Sonic & Knuckles as well as a selection of Master System games. Heck, have a menu with the Power Base Converter icon and a whole slew of Master System games including the original Phantasy Star and all the Sonic games. Give us all the AM2 arcade game console ports, rare RPGs and anything else you can cram into the thing.

“development has shifted to in-house”
Is there source for that?
SEGA of Japan’s official Twitter account says that on their post about the delay.
Thank God AtGames made the “mistake” of letting that slip. Now they’re out and we can have a good product.
No more atgames you say? Immediately I went from nope not gonna buy it, to take my money.
Just one question though, does this mean Sega does have an internal hardware studio still along with their software studios?
If so, this will be the first official piece of actual Sega hardware in two decades.
Sega stopped making home consoles, but never stopped making hardware for arcades.
A bit ambitious with that last set of demands. lol
But since Sega owns Atlus, I would love to see crusader of centy on it though! 🙂
Hi people. I’ve been developing this emulator frontend for nearly 10 months to use it on my Raspberry Pi, and now that Sega has announced they got rid of AtGames, I decided to try to offer it to Sega:

If you’d like it for the Mega Drive/Genesis Mini, I’d appreciate a RT or comment on the tweet I sent them yesterday 🙂

Thanks a lot in advance!
AtGames lost money by spoiling the surprise and we benefit from it!
It’s unlikely to happen, but I wish we’d get Sega Cd and 32x games included as well.
