I’m still not convinced that this is the way I wanted Shinobi to return, considering how great Shinobi could be on a HD console. Still I am glad that it has returned! Whilst there are some design choices that I’m not a fan of (namely the combo scores that pop-up all over the screen instead of tidily in the corner) I think they’ve gotten a lot of things right and have captured a lot of what made Shinobi 3 such an awesome game.
Then there’s those graphics…

Well, I watched the whole thing and honestl it looks kinda lame
I think it looks O.K. and that is a shame. What’s next, will SEGA let Sumo make their Sonic games? Imagine what this game could have been. The “last man standing” nowadays is Virtua Fighter, even without Mr. Suzuki. Maybe the next thing will be Virtua Fighter Kinect.
I love SEGA (especially the SEGA between MS and DC) and I love this site, but it more and more becomes a “retro thing”.
Looks good to me, and I’m betting it’s going to get pretty good reviews, too. But I can’t shell out for a 3DS, so I’ll hold on to the extremely unlikely hope that it’ll come out for XBLA or PSN eventually.
I was initially looking at this game as one of the few to have/convinced me to buy a 3DS, but the more I see of it the more disinterested I become. The environments, while varied, are kind of boring, and the game itself looks kind of boring. There isn’t a whole lot going on.
Yuki Onna ^_^ ! i really want to play this game.
Hergen; because this is the first bad shinobi game? Have you been asleep since 1993, or did you really enjoy shinobi legions, shinobi ps2 and nightshade?
I hated the digitized characters in legions, but everything else was great (ok, the movieclips were very cheesy to). My favorites in the series are Super Shinobi and the two GG Shinobis. I think Shadow Dancer and even Shinobi 3 are far inferior.
Now that you mention the PS2 Shinobis, the ugly game for GBA comes kreeping back in my mind too. You’re right, the series was destroyed before. It just pains me everytime they repeat their mistakes.
The music in legions wasn’t exactly par for the course either. The gameplay was bland, the graphics looked like they belonged on the 32X, level design wasn’t memorable. It was an average game at best, but in the context of this being a killer ap for the Saturn and one of Segas biggest brands, it was shit.
I’ve never heard of someone not liking 3 though. What was wrong with it? O.o
I like it, it is a nice game. I only like the other three more.
VERY impressed w/ this vid. 1st off, the biggest concern people had w/ the 1st details of this game were the graphics. But they look MUCH better in motion than in screenshots. And Griptonite did a great job using a lot of different effects to keep the scenery interesting. And the scene where you’re on the road battling the tank looks really cool. AND the cutscenes look good.
You can’t judge the gameplay too much one way or the other from the 1st level. The platforming already looks pretty vicious. There weren’t a lot of enemies on screen but I played a few DS games by Griptonite and they LOVE to flood the screen w/ baddies.
One thing you are guaranteed to love: the controls. Griptonite are masters at precise control. Button response are lightning quick and 100% accurate.
Oh man I don’t know what I was on when I said that the game looked lame in my first post.
I take all that back. After watching it again it looks amazing :S
The variety of attacks of the first boss is beyond compare.
