Sonic Team gives Hell Yeah! their approval

Arkedo Studios, the French developer behind the upcoming digital title Hell Yeah! had a meeting with two main members of Sonic Team, where they played the game and told them what they thought about it. One of the guys was the infamous and lovable Takashi Iizuka.

“They said, not a lot sucks, but you should pay attention to what happens when you’re jumping, the stop and go, the inertia you have when you’re jumping on platforms. You should add this little thing, this little thing… We said, hey yeah, it’s much better. Thank you very much. That’s the craftsmanship. Those guys, they are bright yellow, they glow. Okay, this guy knows what he’s talking about. We loved it.”

Yeah, there are now developers asking Sonic Team what they think about their platforming game. I consider this to be a positive step and I’m glad that Arkedo Studios is so open to feedback. I think this is something that more developers need to do. If something is broken, fix it. Make a great game! Hit the jump to hear more quotes on what they thought!

“They even raised a glass of champagne after playing the game. That’s something we’ll never forget. We went for supper with them. The first day it was like, okay, we don’t know you. That was normal, because they hadn’t play it. Then they played and said, okay, good job, and cheers. That was important for us.”

You can read more over at Eurogamer. Including how it took them 6 years to seal the deal with SEGA to release the game. Now that is passion.

Wait… Did I read that wrong or did Iizuka give advice on the physics? If so, *laughs uncontrollably*

  2. jaoy says:

    ^my thoughts exactly

  3. Chris K. says:

So… Is Yuji Naka anywhere involved?

If so… Moving on. Iizuka just helped ruin Hell Yeah! and now… Of Hell NO.

You guys are like… the hatinest haters. Your fandom of Sonic has somehow twisted you, and you can never be satisfied with anything.

  5. Crazytails says:

Well instead of looking at it that way, why not look for the cause/reason of everything. Its not like the fans would have been like this if 1. They didnt love the franchise, and 2. If it was actually treaten with care.

You cant just say someone is a hater. Things just arent so good “yet”. But if they were, everyone would be happy and you wouldnt have to write such a comment

Centrale does have a point, considering Sonic Team is full of professional game designers, I see nothing wrong with them giving out advice. I see no reason how this can also mean Hell Yeah is going to be a bad game. And its not like their recent form is anything bad to go by.

But good on Arkedo, seems like the guys are big SEGA fans if they kept coming back year after year with ideas for them. Hope they get places in the future.

I wouldnt say it means hell yeah is going to be a bad game. Looking at the craeativity in a game like sonic colours i am sure sonicteam
Is full of talented people. I just dont consider iizuka as one of them.

When he frequently talks so much rubbish

    • Aki-at says:

I think that’s a bit unfair on poor Iizuka. I’m not his biggest fan but as the old saying goes “You’re only as good as your last game” and his last game being Sonic Generations, his certainly upped his game.

He was involved in Sonic 3 and Knuckles, NiGHTS, became the director for Sonic Adventure 1 and 2, ruined himself on Shadow and NiGHTs 2 but has redeemed himself in Colours and Generations.

Though not sure if he gave advice or just someone in Sonic Team, or Sonic Team in general.

I can’t “just” call someone a hater? As if I don’t have evidence of Sonic “fans” year-after-year endless hating? I don’t want to generalize. I know there are Sonic fans out there who are able to enjoy and appreciate the games, old and new. But there’s a significant segment of Sonic fandom comprised of joyless manchildren with an out of control sense of entitlement, driveling on and on endlessly as if they’ve somehow been horribly betrayed. To those people, I say… something seriously deranged is going on in your mind. Some kind of Gollum ring shit has happened to you. You’ve destroyed yourselves. Sega owes you nothing. But you owe the rest of the world something: to get over it and move on with your life. Either accept and enjoy the new direction(s) of the series, or accept that it is never going to be what you want it to be and find something else to enjoy. Do you recognize the common element of those options? ACCEPT. Because you are not game designers. You are not the ultimate arbiters of what makes Sonic games or any games great. You sit back and bitch endlessly about other peoples’ hard work. Half the time I think some of you people aren’t even really Sonic fans, you’re some kind of mercenary trolls who are role-playing this psychotic bullshit. You are ruined inside. And I’m sick of all your bile spilling out all over the internet! “These video games aren’t exactly what I think they should be.” Who gives a fuck. Everyone likes to express an opinion but you guys have lowered the practice to something utterly toxic. Surely you can see that the fanbase is so vast and fragmented that nothing will ever satisfy all of you? Obviously Sega sees that. And kudos for them for never ever ripping into you intolerable over-entitled brats like this. That’s professionalism right there. Is there any site for all Sega news EXCEPT Sonic? Because I’ll kickstart that shit into the next fucking century. Twisted jerks.

To me it just seems strange when any other franchise gets redone in a horrible way or destroyed to an extent, many seem to be in agreement. For example shining force, golden axe and shinobi(the latter being less bad than the others) get recognized by everyone as step backs, while sonic games always seem to get some kind of free pass to be average. Dont get me wrong, i loved sonic colors and sonic generations, but there still seems to be something lacking in sonic games. Something you can find in team yakuza’s games, or sakai sans latest pso2 and even the latest all star racing, which is as ive probably said before, heart, real passion and ambition. Sonic games seem to stop at some kind of boundary as if there’s no possibility for the franchise to get better while this was common in the 90’s. Just look at s3k compared to sonic 2. You can prefer sonic 2 but you cannot deny the improvement and thought process that went into s3k, perfectly executed. Dont know if its gotta do with budget or time, but i am so convInced that its not a farfetchd request.

And this is only talking about the good games. I do not consider sonic 4 as a well managed game and i dont lik pointing fingers. But twice in a row i do have to question iizukas position. A nagoshi wouldnt let that happen behInd the wheel. Sure he let super monkey ball slide, but at least you can say that it is because he is not so much involved with that anymore.

But yeah, the fandOm can be a bit crazy :p. Hope i dont belOng with them 🙁

Ps: writing on phone, excuse my spell and grammar

    • Centrale says:

Well, I kinda flew off the handle there. I shouldn’t be so harsh. Ultimately I can’t fault the fans who really care about their favorite series but feel it’s going in a different direction than they want it to. I’ve had that happen to some of my favorites too, although none are as long-running as Sonic.

    • CrazyTails says:

Lol, I didn’t really take it that way so it’s okay. There is a bit of truth in there as well so ^^

    • Aki-at says:

Why are you guys making up? I wanted a fight to the death! I am disappoint.

    • CrazyTails says:

Lol, me and central are cool 8)

    Oh look, a near-flame war.

I thought people were better than this…
